Your doctors should be willing to check into tests or treatments with you instead of accusing your son of "faking it".
I would demand an MRA to start with. It's an easy, and fairly inexpensive test to start with. An MRA would give you an idea of what the carotid arterys look like. If they show any narrowing, further tests (such as an angiogram) should definately be done.
