From what I have read and from personal experience, it seems that most people have more damage on the right side of the brain and it affecting them on the left side of their body.  Has any research been done to find out if it is more often worse on that side of the brain first or worse than the the left or is it just a coinsidence? [smiley=confused.gif]

 Very interesting.I don't have an answer but This was the case for Kathleen.It was her first stroke and she then had 2 more on that side(2 strokes on the left side of her brain, 3 on the right side).The right side was the most devastating stroke also.

Laura - Very interesting theory indeed!  I wonder if it has to do with the dominant side.  Being right handed (controlled by the left side of the brain) I wonder if it's the non-dominant side that ends up being worse off.  My doc said my right side was worse than the left.  I wonder if we have any left-handed people on this board that can confirm their left side is worse..???

No, the theory of being the dominant side that you write with is not true because I am left handed!  It just seems as though that almost everyone that I have seen and talked with has had more of a problem on the right side of the brain vs. the left side.  I was just wondering.  It just gives you something to think about.   ::)

My sister has mm.  She was diagnosed 12/97 after a few TIA;s.  She had a stroke 02/01.  /she had the surgeries 12/02 and 01/03.  The effects on her body are split.  Her right arm/hand good,  left arm/hand (gimpy) are bad.  Her right leg is definitely weaker, her left leg is stonger.  Go figure.

I know these are old posts, however I was reading through all these and found this question very interesting.   MY son has moyamoya on the right side of his brain, but also has cerebral palsy.  His left arm is affected in many ways.  There are days that his left arm does somewhat what he wants and other days it goes directly in back of him.  None of his therapists have seen this.  This may help explain some of his differences.  Maybe when the disease has been progressing is when his left arm is worse.
Just some thoughts.

You, I can't really answer that myself, but I'm a "true" lefty....almost everything I do is with my left hand.  I had to go through both occupational and physical therapy due to my stroke (on my right side).  I had to pretty much learn how to write again.  The only thing I could do well was feed myself (with a pair of chopsticks) :P.  I couldn't hold a fork, it was too heavy for my hand/fingers to hold steady.  I'm more adept with a pair of chopstick anyway....(anything for food) [smiley=ohjez.gif]  I guess you can tell what my favorite hobby is....that right....eating!! [smiley=crackup.gif]  Well, after months of therapy all is well and haven't had any problems since surgery 2 years ago.

Your brain's strengths lay split down the two hemisphers. One side is more math and problem solving and the other is better at art and music.  I don't remember which is which. Since we have been blessed with MM our brains have adapted to the poor cirulation and parts of our brains will do what the other parts are having trouble with.

In my case, my speach center was almost wiped out by my stroke but I can communicate fine. When i get realy tiered I start to slur and my hand looses grip and my leg limps.

Also one side of the brain is more dominat the the other in most people. and yes left brain controls the right side of the body and vise versa. In my phycology class there was a video of a girl that had to have 1/2 of her brain removed( a whole hemisphere) and she was very close to normal. This girl had other problems so she died around 5 but they did not atributit it to her missing 1/2 her brain.

I have unilateral MM--only on my right side.  My medical team continues to monitor my left side.  I was told that I had a stroke on my left, but I wasn't aware of it (asymptamatic).

Hi,  EMily, my daughter, had almost no blood flow to the right side of her brain at the time of surgery.  One of the doctors working w/Dr. Steinberg, Dr.Kevin Chao, said that people usually have a worse time w/the left side surgery.  Emily did have more swelling, bruising, etc. on that side even though the scar was smaller and her blood flow was way better on the left side.

Mine was left side. I had mine done at the Mayo clinic in MN.  They thaught my tempral artery was too small so they bypassed using one in my forhead. Either was that part is not giving me enough blood folw to the spot. I was lucky since they thaught that woould be the case before my surgery they did the musscle on the brain thing (I think the endomo..... something), it is listed with the surgey "Medical info" spot on this site. Now I have the sufecent flow. It did take me about a year to want to go back to finish my degree in Electrical Engineering, and about another to stop getting "C"s.
