Title: please help should my mom have surgery again
Post by ak on Apr 18th, 2004 at 1:28am
Hello everyone! It has been awhile. My mom 53 had sta/mca bypass on the right dec. 12. 2003. Surgery went well , but one and half hours later mom had a stroke on her left side of her brain.  She was in the hospital until feb. 2004. She needs 24hr. but is now talking a little. She has come from mars to earth in
short amount of time. The spect scan after her stroke and surgery show that she has little blood flow to both frontal lobes and left parietal lobe.  We go april 26th to see Dr. rose in houston tx (surgeon). It seems to me that surgery is the best option from what i have read. But i am so scared for my mom. The decision is hers and i will respect it. She seems to be aware  and understand everything around her. She just cannot communicate it . She speaks  a little . I am so proud of my mom. she is amazing. Please help me! Does anyone have any advice or experience on surgery for  both sides. Or any opinion on this. Thank you all for the chance to communicate. I am sorry it has been so long. I have been busy helping take care of my mom.
                          a.k.

Hi A.K.

I am Kathy.  I had surgery in Miami on March 16 or 17 on my left side.  I fell in the bathroom one night and went backwards and did not want to hit my head on anything.  I was going down and I was making sure nothing was going to hit that side of my head.  When I finally made it down there I started screaming for the nurse who was right out side the door.  My left had started waving uncontrollable by itself and then my body also went off by is self.  I went out and did not remember anything untill they had 4 nurses and one male physical therepist putting me on a sheet and putting me in bed asking me my name, where I was, who was the president, ect,  I knew exactly what they where saying but could not talk and then I started blabbing out something like "KAA KAA KAA KAA KUU KA KU" Boy was I scared when that came out of me and not able to control it.  I started crying like nobodies business and asking for my husband.  They told me I was weak and that was what has happen to me.  If that was so why had that not happen earlier to me while I was going to the bathroom and else where by myself.  It happened again the next night.  The same damn thing.  I did get my scupples back quicker that time.  They were trying to say again I was weak and that time I told told them Oh hell no, that was a seizere or a stroke.  I was picking up a cup off the beautiful tables they have in the hospitals and I dropped and said " Oh hell!!  My doctors nurse came in at the same time and asked what oh hell was.  Told her about the cup situation and that I could not pick it up and I thought I was.  She was going to come back to see if I could later which I could.  But that is what is happening to me all the time now.  I was brushing my hair and putting a branett in where the kojak section is covered with the long hair and I kept droping it and picking it up and dropping it and picking it up and finally it went down the sink and I cused and relized I did not even have the brush in my hand either.  That was so weird and so demeaning at the same time that I went and sat down and did not know wether to cry or throw something to break. Just letting you know it is all scarry and it is all hard to handle but any one of us will be here for you when ever you need us.  It may take time to click in on these durn keys sometimes but we will sure be there with a shoulder or a prayer or if we can give some can of advise.  (May have some miss spilt milk along the way but it can always be wiped up)

Kathy

Thank you so much ak, for the update on your Mom. I remember you and your mom well from earlier posts this year. I cried my eyes out thinking of what you, your Mom and Dad must have been going through after your Mom's surgery and stroke. God bless ya's! That's a road I can't imagine traveling. I've been praying for you and your family that her recovery be swift, and now you say another surgery. I can definately inderstand your fears. It's very common to have surgery on both sides. Some mm specialists do both at the same time, while others wait a week or longer. That all depends on the degree of blockage in each individual. Who knows ak, perhaps the better blood flow will help your Mom with her recovery and speech even more once she gets the proper blood flow to her brain. Please know that your mom and you are in my continued thoughts and prayers. [smiley=hug.gif]

God bless,
Mar

Hi A.K.,

I read you letter for the first time late April 26, so I realize your appointment with Dr. Rose has past. I felt like I needed to respond to you.  I know this must be a very difficult decision for your family.  My father had the bypass surgery by Dr. Rose in Oct 03.   He is doing well, recovering slowing but surely.  His set backs have included needing a shunt in Dec 03 and  suffering a seizure in Jan 04.  Dr. Rose had  originally talked about doing surgery on the other side in Jan 04.  Because ofthe setbacks, we were more comfortable to wait until he was stable and felt stronger.  My father is in his mid-60's, so I think he is on the older end of patients that have this surgery.  We wanted to be convinced that the first surgery has improved his condition before he went ahead with the second.   As time goes on, I have a feeling he will be "going for it" by the end of the summer.   Best of luck to your mother and your family.  I know my family has the upmost confidence with Dr. Rose.
All my best,
aka

I live in Houston and Jennifer had her surgery here. Her doctor was Dr. James Grotta. She was at Herman down town. I think he's the best there is. Her surgen moved to Boston but I'm sure he has another surgen just as good. E-mail me any time carols3471@sbcglobal.net
