Title: Surgery/Treatment while "unstable" Post by dbohot on May 21st, 2004 at 1:49pm
My dad is slowly regaining consiousness and is breathing on his own now...that is good. :) But he is still considered "unstable". :( The doctor says there is nothing they can do till he stabilizes... and then they will re-evaluate him for surgery. I am wondering what other peoples' experiences with this has been? [smiley=huh.gif] I am afraid to wait two weeks for him to hopefully stabilize as I don't see what is going to prevent another stroke from happening in the meantime (they are getting closer together, it was only 3 weeks between this one and the last) and how is he really going to stabilize without blood flow anyway? And is there a point when there is too much damage to the brain already (as was decided for Savannah?) :-/

Mandy was in very bad shape when she got her surgery but as I stated before they waited a month or so for her brain to cool down from her strokes because she had so many. Physically though she could not even sit up without her whole body shaking she had to go out to Stanford in an air ambulance which I understand is very hard to get Ins. Co. to approve so that gives you a bit of an idea what kind of shape she was in. Hope this helps.

What prevented her from having more strokes while you were waiting for the surgery?

To clarify I was told by Dr'S. At HUP that lovenox would not make her brain bleed in the doses she was taking. She took it for over a year and she was fine. I'm not sure if it will make your brain bleed or not I was told no but others may no more about it. I don't want to give bad info. that was our experience with it, I guess any blood thinner could it is based upon the dose. Just wanted to clear that up.
