Title: Moyamoya and Botox
Post by alice_moya on Jul 9th, 2004 at 3:52pm
My doctor recommended that I get Botox on my good leg next week because the muscle has been getting stiff.  Can anyone else relate to this

alice_moya,
Mandy gets Botox in her bad arm, I'm a little confused as to why you would get it in your good leg. She has extreme spastisity in her arm so the Botox freezes the muscle so its not so spastic, it has helped her alot she can now lift her arm, her hand isn't completely curled up like it was and as of lately she can move her wrist up and down slightly but slighlty is more than it ever has moved.

Alice

My sister Patty gets botox injections in her left hand.  Does it work --IMO it does not.  Her fingers are still curled up and the arm is full of stiffness.  She has been receiving the botox for a year or so.

Patty will be getting a pump into her abdomen with a lead into the spinal column.  The medicine (baclifin) will be sent directly into the fluid.  The pump has to be refilled approx every 60 days.  It is filled from a shot through the skin into a head on the pump.  Patty was tested a week ago and she responded positively.  This really helped her spasticity.

I will keep up to date - her pump will be installed on Monday July 19th.

Wow Janice, that's amazing. Thanks for the info. I sure pray that it works! Did her doctor there where you live order this or is this a result ordered by the Florida Neurological Institute? I remember you telling me that the Neurological Institute dealt with medications that heal the brain. How very interesting. I can't tell you how much I pray this does in fact improve Patty's progress. Please keep us posted as to how it all goes. My best to Patty and hugs to all. [smiley=hug.gif]

Janice,
Yes it has helped Mandy tremendously I can't believe it didn't work for Patty. It has to be injected into certain specific muscles in your forearm for each individual finger, the neuro. follows a book very carefully to make sure it is in the right muscle for what ever finger is worse, I wonder if she is getting enough because it is very very exspensive and ins. has to pre approve it, she also gets them in the back of her shoulder and now can lift her arm so her elbow is as high as her shoulder and her hand is now only cupped where it was curled up before you couldn't even pry it open. She can also straighten her arm barely short of perfectly straight where before it was litterly stuck up under her breast it was so spastic. Mandy also goes to physical therapy though does Patty? They don't specifically work on her hand though they stretch out her arm with a machine, so I feel the botox alone is responsible for her hand straightening out. Mandy has been getting Botox for about a year.

Hi Alice,

I don't know a thing about Botox but just a couple of days ago I posted that I've been wondering about you.  How have you been doing?  Anything new on the medical front that you can update us with?

You've been in my thoughts and I hope that you have been feeling fairly well.

Lisa
