Title: First TIA after Surgery
Post by David on Jul 28th, 2004 at 10:04pm
I was just curious how much problems with TIA's (at least that is what I think it was) people have had after surgery.  It has been almost four weeks sense my second surgery.  5 weeks sense my the surgery on my left side.  I just had a episode of numbness that started in the right side of my face, traveled to my right hand, up my arm and down my right side to my foot.  I have never had one do that.  It lasted about 30 minutes.  The left side was the worst side that is why they operated on it first.  I e-mailed Dr. Steinberg and asked him.  This is the first symptoms I have had since getting out of the hospital and was pretty happy about it.  I know you can have symptoms after surgery I just didnt plan on having any that bad.  Let me know your experiences.

Thanks,
David

David,

I had surgery about 1 1/2 years ago on one side.  I still have TIAs.  Some fairly bad and more frequent ones that aren't so bad.  I was told to lay down and rest and if it didn't go away in about 30 minutes to go to the ER.  I know some others, including DJ, periodically still get them too.  Even after they have had a successful surgery.  I have no idea what's going on in this brain of mine because I'm overdue for an angio, so I can't say if this is "normal" or not.  I will be very interested in hearing what Dr. Steinberg can tell you.  It's a bit unnerving I admit,  but know you are not alone in experiencing this.

Hope you are feeling better now and please let us know what you hear.

Lisa

David,

Holly had a couple after surgery, both on her right side of the body which was the least worse out of the two, but the second TIA was the worst one, she had to leave school early, it lasted for about 15-20 minutes and traveled throughout her face and arm and leg as well....
We were told they should be expected, but since then has not had anymore on either side at all.

Thanks a lot.  That makes me feel some better.  I feel fine now and my blood pressure is right where Dr. S wants it.  Lisa, I will let you know what Dr. Steinberg saids.  He usually responds to e-mails within 24 hours.

Tyler didn't have his first after surgery "episode" until 2 months post-surgery.
The first one was on his birthday on August 19th and only lasted a few minutes. He had a total of 5 by the end of September, but none since. The last one was really bad, lasted about 5 minutes, and he was unable to move anything from the neck down. The right side just laid there and the left leg kicked uncontrolably and the left arm just "slithered" around. (not sure how to best describe the motion the arm was doing). Afterwards he felt fine, just a bit tired.
No 'episodes" since though. Not sure if this will help anyone, but I guess just knowing your not alone is a bit of help.

Thanks a lot Rena.  I hate Tyler had to go through that but it makes me feel better knowing that other people went through some bad episodes also after surgery.  It just really concerned me because I never had an episode that bad before surgery.  Thank you for your input.

David,
Tyler never had an "episode" before surgery, only headaches, so I know just what you mean. It was very scary.

I had TIA's for a few days the weeks after my surgeries. None of them were real bad but happened quite often. I have heard of many people having TIA's so it must not be uncommon. My surgeries were in April and i have not had a TIA since June but realize there is still a chance for more. I agree that TIA's are scary just like everything thing else that we have all been through.
