Title: Disability Insurance Issues Post by jhattori on Aug 25th, 2004 at 5:11pm
Hi,
I am a newbie to this forum. My father had a stroke 4 years ago and was diagnosed with MM and has been collecting disability for the past 4 years. Within the past month or so, the insurance carrier has sent them a letter stating that they will terminate his coverage next year. They are saying that his condition is considered an illness, and that is why he is entitled to 5 years. If his were considered an injury, he would be able to collect until he is 65. Has anyone had similar experiences with their insurance carrier? |

Hi jhattori -
Well, my work just recently offered voluntary long term disability for us to purchase. I had a long conversation with the rep from the insurance company. At the time they were offering it, we didn't have to go through any medical questionairs or exams. I was advised to sign up at the first offering because if I elected it later, I WOULD have to go though a medical exam and I would most definitely be denied due to the MM. Denial aren't good on anyones record. Anyway, that wasn't your question! Anyway, MM is considered a disease, not an in injury. Disability due to a disease is limited to 5 years (well, on my plan anyway). Sorry, that's probably not what you wanted to hear. Has your dad had surgery? Any disability due to a stroke? Is he able to work? Usually, they limit it to 5 years due to the fact that although you may not be able to go back to you profession, you are able to do alternative work. Like I said - I had a long conversation with the insurance rep. My advise - look at his policy closely. Consult a lawyer if you feel it's necessary. -Shari |

Kind of off-topic, but do you know a Hal Hattori, wife Nella, and son Nick? I was Nick's 4th grade teacher many years ago (he'll be a high school junior now), and I know his father has family in Hawaii.

Diane,
Unfortunately I don't know a Hal Hattori. Surprising, since Hattori is not a real common name. |

Hi,
I will start collecting my first federal disability check in September. I am already on state disability for three months. This is very disturbing news to me. So after 5 years, my nsurance carrier has the right to drop me? Is that 5 consecutive years or is it collective? I suffered a stroke which paralyzed my right side. I am on medical leave from my employer. I 've been on and off for the past year and a half. Now, I feel like I'm being rushed back to work, whether I'm ready or not. Doug |
