Title: Current Issues with Dr Steinberg /his office pt 1
Post by sdl on Sep 9th, 2004 at 9:53am
This will no doubt cause a defensive reaction in those of you that believe strongly in Dr Steinberg, but he has again NOT done right by my daughter, even 15 years of experience later:

My daughter is 20, pregnant, uninsured, and has MM corrected by indirect bilateral bypass surgeries in 1990 by Dr Michael Edwards at UCSF, after a 'no surgery, but we will monitor her status' exam by Dr Steinberg at Stanford.
Keep in mind she had had a very small stroke and some TIAs before the exam, and the Stanford MRI showed a classic and fullblown MM- and just prior to her surgery, the angio showed 90 and 100% blockages of her ICAs too...

Update:
I finally got in contact with Dr Steinberg's office this June to inquire about having a current MRI done so that we can know Laura's exact physical status prior to delivery the end of September, since we have not had a doctor's follow-up since 1991, or a scan since Sept 1995 which showed no changes from her 1-year post-surgery MRI with excellent revasularization.

After she and her County-paid doctors jumped through all the referral hoops demanded, they set an appointment for July, and Laura went alone.

She brought with her her MM medical files (85 pages) and all of her MRI/Angio/etc scans from 1990-1995 for them to look at.
A copy of her medical files were made, and they took the scans into the back.

After 1 hour in the lobby, and a second hour in the exam room alone, Dr Steinberg came in and did a rudimentary physical and asked a few questions:
The exam consisted of listening to her heart and lungs, feeling her ECA pulse, having her do some basic visual and coordination tests, asking about headaches/treatment (maybe twice a year bad ones, takes an Advil to clear up), and asking her due date (end of Sept).
He then told her she was fine and they would not be doing any tests until after the baby was born, say November.
He then left the room, and that was that.
[smiley=huh.gif]

She went out to the lobby, and they argued six ways to Sunday to keep all her original scans 'until after the possible test in November', reasurring her she could get them back any time no problem, they would stay right there for her, etc.

After she agrees to this plan, and is walking to the door, they then ask her how she is going to pay for the visit...
UMMMMM, what?
No one had ever said one word about cost, even when she personally had talked to them on the phone and made sure they had her current contact data for the files, not when she checked in, nothing, and she had assumed that the elaborate referral process was so that it was covered-
but NO, they wanted payment before she could leave.

Remember, 20, pregnant, alone, and uninsured, with no clue this is going to cost $$$.
Fortunately, I am just a cell call away and they take credit cards, or god knows what would have happened!

During this payment process she also discovers that they have updated exactly NOTHING in her file from the 1989 data even though she provided all that during her phone call and they confirmed it was now current... the staff are resentful at her disbelief, and displeased on her insistance to update the data in front of her.

So, $600 later, with no testing done, we are right back where we started I'm thinking.
Aggravating, but there is really no one and no where else to turn...
:(

Hi,  [smiley=wave.gif]

I would just like to say that I believe your post will in no way cause a defensive reaction from those of us who believe so strongly in Dr Steinberg. His remarkable, life saving genius and love for his patients speak so much louder than any one alleged incident. Thems the facts! [smiley=smug.gif]

Boy, isn't that the truth!  Well said, Mar!

I am sad that one patient didn't have the same wonderful experience that most of us have had with Dr. Steinberg.  He is such an awesome doctor and person, but hopefully with Laura's original doctor, things get resolved for  her.

I agree with DJ's suggestion about not naming doctors.  People afflicted with MM are scared and seeking help.  We don't need to muddy things up by bad-mouthing other people.

Staunch Dr. Steinberg supporters,

Jill, Campbell and Tara
