Maybe I am late on this or something but I have recently been reading on the board and links about possible viral infections having a link to MM.  Do you or your children have a viral infection always when blood work is done?  Everytime Trey's pediatrician takes his blood they say he has a viral infection.  I asked about this the last time they did it and they told me that my school age child was probably bringing something home that she is immune to that Trey isn't because of his age and the fact that he always stays home and everything.  Today I took him in because he has a cold and threw up this morning and the office is only open half a day today and not again until Monday.  They took his blood and again said viral infection.  Any thoughts, opinions, comments? :-/

Oh, Trey is acting fine and hasn't thrown up again.  He has a cold.......I guess.

I been thinking about your precious little Trey lately, and hoping and praying he’s doing well. As far as your question goes, I don't have children, but IMO, the more I think about it, I bet most kids WOULD come up with some kind of viral infection, technically, if lab work were done. Viral infections are microscopic germs, and they’re in the air we breathe and things we touch. Some viruses are harmless because our bodies build up a defense, but some of course are more serious. The common cold for instance, it’s the most common viral infection there is. Some viruses lay dormant too, like a wart or cold sore, etc. Some even come from our house pets, like a cat scratch or fleas. I could go on & on. So ya see what I mean? You could think... why wouldn’t a child have a virus show up often in lab work, keeping all that in mind? Of course we look for the signs if it’s a serious viral infection, like mumps, measels, chickenpox, etc. and take action, (keeping them hydrated with mm)as you have I'm sure, but IMO, its not MM related. To date, it’s NEVER been proven that MM is viral related.

Hi my name is Brad. I have moya moya and had brain surgery for it in December. My doctor to has claimed i could have a viral infection but is waiting for my blood work to come back to see. Doctors are still trying to figure out what causes moya moya but cant link anything. I will be pleased to inform you of what my doctor says about me having a possible viral infection if you wish. My daughter's T-Suppressor Cells are disproportionately high on all her immunology labs (she's had three).  I have been told that these are the cells that battle viruses.

I would really like to know more about the connection of moyamoya and viruses.  My daughter tested positive for CMV (cytomegalovirus) in her urine at 10 weeks old.  At three months old, she started having seizures, and there was a thought at one time that Daphne might have gotten CMV congenitally (which can cause seizures mental retardation, blindness, hearing loss etc); however her spinal taps, cord blood etc came back negative for congenital cmv.

However, she has chorioretinal scarring and optic atrophy in one eye, which can be caused by CMV -- so the virus obviously did some damage to her.

We now understand that Daphne's seizures and delays were probably from her moyamoya... but I still wonder if this could have been caused by the CMV virus.

On the other hand, Daphne also was born with a heart defect - her aortic arch was narrowed.  This defect does not go along with congenital CMV - but it is seen with moyamoya disease, which points to some genetic cause.

Really confusing -- I wish I knew more!

By the way, I am glad Trey is feeling better.  Something must be going around -- Daphne had a fever and was vomiting on Thursday night and Friday.  She's doing lots better now, too.
