Title: 1 Year Post Surgery Inspiration
Post by sc_girl on May 18th, 2005 at 1:26pm
It's been 2years, 4months, and 3 1/2 weeks since I had a stroke at the age of 35.  Later came the terrifying [smiley=JAW_DROP.gif] diagnosis that I had MoyaMoya Disease and would have to undergo  2 brain surgeries. :'(

Today, May 18th, is the 1year anniversary of my first bypass surgery performed by the amazing miracle working Dr. Daniel Barrow at Emory Univ. Hospital in Atlanta, GA.  If it wasn't for his precision and expertise [smiley=bow.gif] I may not be able to post this message today.  If it wasn't for the unrelenting love of my mom, Joan [smiley=heart.gif] and my dad, Bob [smiley=heart.gif] who stayed with, put up with, and cared for me after both operations, my recovery may not have gone so smoothly.  I am forever grateful to have both of them in my life. [smiley=thumb.gif]

I feel I'm one of the lucky ones not to have suffered any permanent damage from my stroke, and had my operations soon enough to prevent a second. I've noticed many of you on this site are not nearly as blessed by God as I have been.

One year ago, I had zero energy [smiley=nono.gif], TIAs [smiley=confused2.gif], was on anti-seizure medication, and felt like I wouldn't live to see another day. [smiley=youknow.gif]  Today, with all of my hair grown back and only 2 thin scars, I'm off all my meds (except aspirin, of course) :), don't need mid-day naps to make it through afternoons :D, can easily stay awake until 11:30pm ;;D, and have more energy than I ever imagined!! [smiley=laugh.gif] Realizing my blessings, I've even joined a volunteer organization to give back to  others.

Not only have I "survived" MM, but it has made me a stronger, better person. [smiley=sayyes.gif] If any of you are facing your surgeries, scared and full of doubt, know this ---
YOU WILL MAKE IT THROUGH! THERE IS LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL!!!!

I hope my success story will give you inspiration to never give up, no matter how dark it seems.

Love and Best Wishes,
SC Girl

SC Girl,

That's wonderful that you have done so well post-surgery, and recovered from your stroke!

Thanks for sharing your story :)

SC Girl,

Congratulations on the anniverisary and for "surviving". Reading your note shows that there is a light at the end of tunnel, esecially for those who are still in the diagnostic phase.

Regards,
Greg

Kris,

Your story is amazing.  Thank you for sharing.  Not having been through this, but having a toddler who is about to make his one year mark, helps me to know how he may feel.  I rejoice with you for your success.  I thank God for all of our successes and pray for future stories like yours.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Michell

Kris -

It's a great feeling, isn't it!  I wish I could bottle it!  I remember when I passed my 1 year I had a smile on my face the entire day  ;;D.  I just realized that I'm coming up on my 2 year anniversary of when I began on this journey.

Congrats on your "survivor-ness"!!

-Shari
