Title: Moya Moya and cosmetic surgery
Post by moyamoi on May 31st, 2005 at 1:15am
I am a 42 year old female, diagnosed with MM in 2001. I have had 2 STA- MCA's and have had no further effects from the illness. I am concidering having some cosmetic surgery done and am worried about going under anaesthetic with MM. Can anybody help with info on this?

Your doctor should be able to help you. All I have been told is with MM it is very important that the blood pressure doesn't go too high or low, there is a narrow window that it needs to be kept in. That is why it is very important to have an anestheologist (sp?) that knows about MM.

Hi Rena!

By any chance do you remember how high is too high for the blood pressure and how low is too low?  I'm curious because when I was in the hospital having my surgeries, they wanted to keep my blood pressure a little high because of the graphs.  I already have a slightly elevated bp and just want to make sure that it isn't too high with the medication I am on.

Thanks,
Michelle

Michelle,

Dr. Steinberg never told me exactly what too high or low was, just that it was important for the anestheologist (sp?) to know about MM. I had asked because I know Tyler has a few more surgeries in his future. Sorry I wasn't any help.

It is important for the aesthesologist to know MM because the amount of mediation they put in the IV to put you asleep has to be less than a normal patient without MM because....what it does is reduces the blood flow to the brain...and MM patients already have a reduced blood flow ...and do not need to be further restricted...before they knew Cara had MM ....her first time under, took forever to wake her up, and when she came too...she was very weak and out of it...we gave her fluids, food, soup...anything to give her more strength...from then on I made sure they used a certain type of medication (do not remember what)...there are several kinds...but each time...Cara comes out of it easier ...the more the asthesologist knows the better it will be monitored.   CarasMOM

Thank you so much to everyone especially Carol for their replies and information. I will be seeing my neurosurgeon next week to run things past him and see what he recommends
