Title: Major surgery for Scoliosis post mm surgery
Post by kelmo on Jun 15th, 2005 at 3:21pm
Our daughter Kelsey (now 13) had a terrible stroke during, or immediately after the bypass surgery (indirect) in Nov 02.  She is pretty much in bed, but still is making very slow steady progress with her pt. Can sit in wheelchair for hours at a time, can stand with help, and still progressing slowly taking steps with help.

She also had Scoliosis.  We recently discovered she will need to have the surgery for this as it is progressing at  a very steady pace.  This is a major surgery (4+ hours).  and we are very much concerned if she can handle it with her condition.  We were wondering if any one on this site had this experience post mm surgery - a surgery for scoliosis, or any other major lengthy surgery for that manner.  We know she will have to be off the aspirin for a while, and we are extremely worried about being under anethesia for this length of time

Hi Kelmo from a NJ MM neighbor ( Monmouth co.)
So sorry that Kelsey is having a terrible time.
Major strokes suck  (had one 3 years ago).
Any signs of improvement are encouraging meaning the rest will come along but it is slow.
Why the rush with the scoliosis surgery?  Especially if she is not standing yet.  Get your answers from your neurologist and neurosurgeon.
My situation is different because I had the stroke  but not the surgery.  All I know is that my neurologist made me wait almost 6 months after my stroke to have dental work.
A lot has to do with the kind of stroke it was.  I had a hemmorage so asprin was the last thing I would need.
Please give Kelsey our best from the MM team and tell her that she's in our prayers.

You be strong and upbeat too.

Take care  Tom G.

Thanks Tom, we are from Camden County area.  We sent an e-mail to Dr Scott today, asking his opinion.   We are hopeful, one day Kelsey may be able to walk again, and the orthopedic doctor is telling us, like MM, that Scoliosis is progressive, and that she is 50% curved now in her spine, and if it continues she will not be able to sit up or stand in the future.

Kelmo,
I just wanted to let you know I will keep your family in my prayers. I have two nieces battling Scoliosis, one already had the surgery, she has been in a wheelchair all her life and they knew she would never walk, so they waited as long as they could. But when one of her lungs collasped because of the curviture, they had no choice but to do the surgery.

My other niece had always been healthy and suddenly she had a severe curve. They found the reason for the curve and will correct that before they do the surgery for the Scoliosis. She looks like she has her hip stuck out to carry a child on it.

I will keep your family in my prayers, MM is bad enough to have to deal with, Scoliosis on top of that has to be hard on you all.

Hi Kelmo...

...my prayers are with you.

When my sister had her scoliosis surgery back when she was about Kelsey's age...while she didn't have MM...she had several damage (lungs and bladder) due to the experimental chemo therapy they did for curing her luekemia when she was 3  (1962)...while she was cured...she suffered damage that progressively went down hill....however her spine was really curved and they were debating whether do the operation or not due to her lungs .....but in the end they did it, she came out of surgery fine,  wore a body at the hips to neck cast for six months...and felt really good after it was removed.  I know surgery is so much better these days compared to 30 plus years ago...but it did make her life better for a little while longer.    Her lungs just couldnt take it any longer so passed on at 16 (I was 18).   I pray that all goes well and when the time is right Kelsey will have the surgery.  Warm Hugs,  CarasMOM

I put the number eighteen in the parathesis but some how a "cool" smile face came on by mistake...I didn't feel cool...I was devastated.   carasmom
