Hello Everyone,

I can't remember if this has ever been brought up or not.  But when Holly had her 1 yr check up in June the doctor mentioned that she should have a Medic Alert Bracelet.  She wrote down exactly what it should say and we ordered one 2 wks later.  What I think is really cool about it.  On the back of the bracelet, it has an online web support and toll free number.  I am able to input Holly's emergency numbers and Dr.'s numbers on the website along with her surgery info.  That way if something happens to her and I am not around, then when she is treated the doctors will know about her Moyamoya.

It gives me peace of mind to know that others can look up the information and better treat her if I can't be there with her watching over her.

By the way she loves wearing the bracelet and is not afraid to show it to others.

Oh my gosh, Hillary!  I am so glad you brought that up.  I had thought about that the other day when someone told me that I should get one.  I meant to mention it here and forgot to do so!  Thanks for reminding me as I have a doctor's appointment this coming week.  I think it's a good idea for all of us MM'ers to have one!

I think this is a great idea.  [smiley=thumb.gif]   I actually have a Medic Alert Bracelet, but I havn't been on top of udating and adding new ailments to my profile...MM being one of them.  Having the bracelet made me feel more comfortable/secure just in case something happened to me, and I was not able to remember or even respond to medical personnel.  I also like the fact that they also have a list of your current medications on file (another thing I need to update).  Thank you for reminding me!  I also recently got a bracelet for my son who has asthma and who is allergic to insect stings/bites; however, I wish he enjoyed wearing it as much as Holly...

Thank you for sharing this with us..I personally think it's a great idea.... ;;D  If anyone is interested in getting one, they now come in different styles like sportsbands, friendship "beaded" styles, watches, etc.

Is it true that you need a prescription to get one?  Or is there someplace online that you can get the bracelet?  Any information would be greatly appreciated.

To my knowlege, no prescription is required.  I picked up an application that was at my local pharmacy; however, there are several sites online.

no prescription is needed that i know of.  I found it easier to call and talk to the person then to do it online.  she was very helpful.  Holly never takes hers off.  we got her the stainless steel one with the little charm and on the front it says

I have Moyamoya and have had 2 STA-MCA bypass surgeries in 2004.  

Then on the back it has the web id info and the 800 number to get more information.

Hi guys....I wear one...from medicalert....especially for my diabetes, cochlear implant (have a magnet in my head that needs to be removed if I need a MRI)...various other things but theres a number on there that the medical staff can call and find out my history which I can update via online....how much insulin I take, my other medications, what i can't have...and of course I am deaf but read lips..plus has my husbands cell number, my moms phone number..which is a lot of information that can't be printed on the bracelet except for immediate info.....been wearing it almost 2 years and haven't (knock on wood) have a problem yet.    I might get one for Cara soon too.

In my diabetes magazine they had an add for some sports look style bracelets for kids that look more like one is wearing a watch instead.

ok i was wrong everyone, my mom is the one that recommended that I get one for my daughter, the doctor agreed.  Anyway its a good thing to have with her starting back to school in a few weeks.

LOL Hillary - your mom done good! The medicalerts are a great idea for everyone with a significant medical condition - Linda's got an old one for allergies to certain meds, but we need to see it updated for MM and web documentation. Great thread. See you soon.

medic alert bracelets are awesome! i have one that is stainless steel and it looks like a nice peice of jewelry for some of the people that don't really want to announce that they have health problems.

in fact it works really well! my boss had to call ems for me...thank God it turned out to be nothing too serious...and the first thing they did was to check for a medic alert and i didn't have to worry. it was great because i couldn't talk and i didn't need to.
