In my research, I have found that the literature says, for the most part, that children of MM patients have a 10% chance of passing on the syndrome. However, the literature and research on MM is sparse to say the least. Many sites still assert that MM strikes mostly young Asian females. I think, from speaking with several doctors, that this part of the MM descrpition is quickly being disregarded.
So on that note, the numbers say 10%, but I would take that with a grain of salt! :-/ I suggest looking at the provided links on MM.com's homepage. There are some helpful websites that DJ has provided us with! Good luck and I am so sorry to hear about your brother and niece. LOL, Stephanie |

Hello,
I am a 34 yr old female,, I was diagnosed in Jan. of 2005 and had direct bypass in July of 2005. My mother is 51 yrs old and is diagnosed a few months ago with MoyaMoya also. I just had my 15 year old Daughter checked with MRI/MRA's test due to some symptoms. WE just recieved the call a few days ago from Neurologist "no moyamoya". A big relief to my husband, myself and our family. We were also told it is genetic in our family. Hope your family the best.. Your MM friend Lena Hope you enjoy this site. It has helped me in many ways. I hope it helps you. |

I've read that moyamoya can be hereditary and there's about a 7% chance that someone else in your family could have it. I was diagnosed in October of 2004 and had my surgeries in November. In fact, my brother has started showing some of the same symptoms like numbness in his fingers and tongue. He has an MRI/MRA scheduled for the 15th this month. We are going to have his tests put on a CD-ROM and send them to Dr. Steinberg for a second opinion. We should know something by the end of the month.
