Hey all!  I went for a routine, 6 month checkup at the dentist yesterday.  While I was there, I asked about future uses of local anesthetic, when I need a filling, for example.  My doctor told me that he would use a different numbing medicine - without epinephrine (sp?) which causes the blood vessels to constrict.  He advised me to contact Dr. Scott just to make sure.

Has anyone had experience with this?  With needing to have a local anesthetic used at a dentist's office?

I will definitely contact Dr. Scott, but wanted to put the question out there....Thanks!

We took Kelsey to the dentist few months back to have a couple of baby teeth pulled.  Dr Scott said it would be ok for her to have epinephrine, low absortion amount and to be careful not to get it into her blood stream ( what ever that means). So we gave his e-mail to the dentist, and every thing went fine

I can barely open my mouth wide, so I've been rescheduling and rescheduling my check-up appointment with mydentist.  :-[  I know, shame on me.  However, I'm glad you posted this question.  I know I can't run from my dentist forever, so I'm going to see if I can get an answer to this question.  It's "good-to-know!"  ;)  Great post.

Shari----I recently went to the dentist and had no problems with a local----I am going back again on Saturday, Oct. 1st for a cracked tooth in the back of my mouth and will have a local again......My dentist knows alot about moyamoya and he knows of my condition....In fact, he was the one who called to let me know of the NY Times Article that appeared around Easter......., IMO, I think you will be just fine----Love and peace to you, Pat

Hi Shari,
When I go to the dentist, he is also aware of my condition and he gives a local without epinephrine, but I also have a reaction to Beta Blockers so he has to bear this in mind too. Hope this helps

I just took Eddie to the dentist a couple days ago to have a filling redone.  They treat him like anyone else, except he gets extra TLC.  Dental work seems fine for you,  just remember Eddie's disabilities and he did great.

    I found out about this from my sisiter.She has suffered severe migraines almost all her life.She's also the one who had a Circle of Willis aneurism repaired.Unfortunatly this wasn't the cause of ehr migraines and she still gets them.Well she finally asked her dentist if he knew of any reason why she may be suffering migraines after her visits.(she thought it may jsut be from being in a certain position for so long durring dental work).That's when he told her about the Epinephrine in the novicaine being a vascular constrictor.She of course no longer gets Epinephrine, or Migraines after dental work. I will take no chances with Kathleen, everyone is different and will ahve a different experience with this.I for one will be sure she never gets Epinephrine. IMO(and this is only my opinion) it's really not worth taking the chance if it can be eliminated without affecting the outcome.I even wrote the name of it on her insurance card so I will not forget.(i'm terrible with remembering names of medications).
