Title: Anyone with EDAS/EMS surgery? Post by fortunegirls on Dec 6th, 2005 at 11:24am
Hi everyone!
I am scheduled for my second STA-MCA Bypass and EDAS on 01/09/06. My first surgery was a STA-MCA Bypass and EMS in 12/03. I am obviously familiar with the EMS procedure but not the EDAS procedure? First, I'm waiting to hear from doc on why EDAS v EMS? Second, I'm not sure what to expect with the EDAS procedure. I've already been told the surgery is not as long so I'm wondering if the recovery period is shorter too. I've read the EDAS procedure is the one where they put the burr hole in your head, does this remain open after surgery? If there is anyone who has experienced either of these procedures and can give me some input -- that would be wonderful. Thank you. Best Wishes to all, Lorie |

Hi, Lorie. I just wanted to let you know that if you go to "Medical Info" on the link bar at the top of the page, and then choose "Moyamoya Surgery" there is a good explanation of the different types of surgeries. The document is by Dr. Steinberg, and each doctor may have a slightly different technique, but it should give you at least a general idea of the difference between EMS and EDAS and what goes on during each surgery.
Each individual is different, so it's hard to say whether one is better. I would talk to my doctor and ask for an explanation about what they plan to do, and what you should expect. Best wishes! Jenny (mom to Daphne) |

I had the EDAS type surgery. My experience in the hospital was a week per surgery. But, everyone's experiences are different so I would definitely speak to your surgeon, as Jenny suggested! Good Luck!
