Hi everyone,

As you all know I am scared to death and now added to this fear is knowing one of the procedures that Dr. Steinberg may be performing on me.

What is an omental graph? Has anybody had this type of surgery? Can anyone shed any light on it.

I ahve done research and nothing is clear for me.

Its either the EDMS or the omental graph. What are they and who has had one or the other.

Please ease my fears...

Hi Yassi,

Although I certainly understand how you feel, God love ya, please try not to be alarmed. You’re in the best hands in the world. These types of procedures you’re talking about are exactly why a MM specialist is so very important, and you’ve got the best, IMO. These are different surgical options an expert like Dr. Steinberg can offer you to manage your MMD. I don’t know your specifics, but I trust there’s a definite reason in your case that he’s choosing these particular procedures.

Omental transposition
This is a surgical procedure that involves taking some omentum (lining surrounding organs in abdomen), which is very rich in blood supply, and placing it on the surface of the brain with the expectation that vessels will eventually grow into the brain and improve blood .supply. This is used only when a direct bypass graft and EDAS is not feasible.

From what you’ve said, it sounds like the EDMS and Omental graph are two procedures or combinations of procedures that will be done for your situation. I myself, have never spoken with anyone having both of these done to give you the details you’d need from their experience, I’m sorry, but I do know without a doubt, there isn’t a place in the world I’d rather be than Stanford with Dr. Steinberg and staff. They’re wonderful and have an impeccable reputation for their success in the many surgical approaches treating MM.

For more detailed info on the procedures. Please look on the medical information section on the site. It’s very lengthy to put here in a post. How I take it is…  the omentum is harvested through a midline abdominal laparotomy, which is not invasive at all. DJ has a great explanation of it all, under “moyamoya surgery.” A paper Dr. Steinberg and Dr. Chang published years ago. It’s listed under EMS on the site though.

Good luck...  I know it must be scary to think of possibly going through a surgery that many on this board aren't too familiar with.   On the bright side, though, at least you are dealing with a surgeon who has enough experience to recognize which form of surgery would be optimal for you, and who has the skill to carry it out.

My daughter, Daphne, had EDAMS surgery with Dr. Steinberg and she is doing sooo much better now.  He is truly an amazing doctor... we owe her life to him.

hey yassi babe.... definitely need to get a hold on those fears...
i'm not really sure how i do it but basically all you can do is get yourself prepared for the surgery as best you can and then leave it up to the surgeon. and it sounds like dr steinberg is pretty damn good at what he does (and that could be a gross understatement)..

try and be as physically healthy as you can, a high protein diet is very effective in recovering from a major operation so it's great to start that as soon as you can.

and mentally i guess just really try and clear your mind of fear and negativity, if you can be in the best possible state going into the operation, and then leave what you can't control to the medical experts then you're most likely going to come out jumping from of your hospital bed and running around teasing the nurses at the earliest moment!

i've seen from experience that going in with a calm mind is definitely more beneficial than going in freaking out!

i mean it's brain surgery... but meh... it's not really that big a deal... happens everyday almost..

anyway, i just hope you can calm down a bit before you go in there.
