My nuerologist just put me on Amitriptyline aka elavil and I was wondering if anyone else is on it or was and how well it worked for them? My neuro said it works for pain and depression and was fairly sure it would work well but just wanted to check with other people !!!

I have been taking Amitriptyline since the beginning of this year, I was having trouble sleeping,concetrating, depressed etc. My neuro said that it was symptoms similiar to post traumatic stress..the medicine has helped some but it is still difficult sleeping and I still have some "down" days but that is life :)  I think it has helped me some.  Good Luck!!

My neurologist had run the idea of Amytriptylene past me but I don't personally take it. My understanding of it is that it is basically Prozac, which in high doses is used to treat depression and in low doses works with pain . I also know that you cannot just stop taking it once you are on it - you have to scale down the dosage and eventually stop.

thankyou your for your comments. I was wondering though for those on it how long it took it for them too feel the full effects. It has calmed me down some but I still am having headachs. The reason I was put on this is because it is one of the few long term medicines my insurance will cover. Thankyou to everyone who has replied or whill reply.

I am on Amitriptyline and have been for over a yr. To be honest, I don't notice a difference. Since my surgery on 05/15/06 my headaches have gotten better :)

I was diagnosed with M/M in January of 2003 and was put on Elavil for the exact same reasons.  Just  FYI, it  is known for weight gain.  I have gained about 30-35 pounds since taking  it.  Because of this, my doctor just took me off and put me on a different drug.  But, I just wanted to let you know that in my doctors on words that sometimes this drug will make you want to "even eat the labels off of the cans in your pantry!!"  It may not be a problem for you, but you may want to ask about what your doctor thinks.   :-/  Laura from Louisiana

I was put on elavil "prior" to my MM dx. It was prescribed for my morning headaches. It did help with the headaches, but I gained 25-30 lbs. I was glad to get off it....just for that reason.

lol....thanks to all the responses too my post. My weight gain for now anyway has been barely minimal im talking like maybe 1-2 pounds. I have noticed a slight diffrence with my headachs arent so intense and dont come as often. thanks again to everyone who replyed to my post.  [smiley=laugh.gif]
