Title: Paige is doing wonderful after direct bypass Post by jnokes on Sep 10th, 2006 at 7:13pm
Paige is doing wonderful after her direct bypass in Memphis,TN on Thursday(Sept.7).The surgery went without any complications but when she was sent to ICU,she developed weakness on her left side which, thankfully, wasn't a stroke or hemorrage. The drs said that she had a seizure which was probably her brain reacting to the surgery. The donor artery was good size and had good blood flow. She spent that night and the next night in ICU.The day after surgery, she was extremely irritable and didn't want to be touched by anyone. Finally she calmed down and slept all night. She hasn't had any pain meds since Friday morning and her swelling has already went down alot.We will probably get to go home tomorrow, the 11th,since she is doing so well.Thank you all for all of your prayers and moral support.

Paige got to come home today(Monday). We were so glad to finally come home. She is doing great, actually better than we expected. She was trying to run & play when we got home ,so we had to try to calm her down as we were afraid she would fall and hurt her head. She hasn't complained of pain since Friday, the day after surgery. It is amazing how well she has tolerated this and how quickly she has began recovering.I will continue to post updates about her recovery.Thank you all so much for your support.

she is in my thoughts and prayers.....glad it all went smoothly.
She did a "direct" bypass....as a child? How large was her artery? That is terrific they could do it for her.....add Memphis to the list of MM success stories! smiles....diane : ) |

OK....I just done my homework (should have done it first) and read your previous posts on your daughter.
Boy you have been through a lot. But, now you are at the final stretch and she seems to be a real trouper. You can breath a sigh of relief at this point and watch her get strong in front of your eyes. As for the white hairs.....Yep....this past year with my sx's getting worse...I seemed to explode in gray hair....and I am only 45 with my family history of LATE graying. My older sisters don't seem to have any! I blame mine on the lack of blood flow....most definately. Sorry the insurance gave you such trouble....but it looks like you had a skilled surgeon and all worked out for you. (I just fininished dble bypass with Dr Steinburg on 8/25 and 8/29) I am comfortable with little pain....but still really tired. well....I'm hoping to continue to hear good news about your daughter. smiles....diane : ) |

Thank you all again so much for your support and esp. all of your prayers.Paige is still doing wonderful. She still hasn't complained with pain and she is full of life except she gets tired easily. At first,I could tell a huge difference in her:she seemed happier and didn't cry as much but now she still has days where she cries alot but I just hope she is just having a bad day.I had my hopes up that the surgery would fix everything I guess. She is still doing better than before.Everyone has their good & bad days, right?
I don't know exactly how large her artery was but I was concerned that the direct bypass wouldn't work since everything I had read said that most kids under 5 don't have large enough arteries. The surgeon did say that it was a very good donor artery and it had excellent blood flow. The day after surgery,a doctor used a doppler to monitor it and it sounded very strong(like he had put it directly on her chest). He told us that was very good.Everyone has been amazed at how well she has done!!!Thanks again to everyone.I don't know what I would have done without this website and everone here!!! :D Jennifer |

Jennifer,
We had a pretty similar experience with Daphne. As soon as she was home after the surgeries, she was soooo happy, and so energetic, and we thought the surgery had been a true miracle. Then some of her old issues started creeping back, mainly fussiness and migrain-type episodes. They were better than before, but the surgery hadn't completely eradicated them, as we had started getting our hopes up for. Those issues have gradually improved, and we still deal with them once in awhile (Daphne had an indirect bypass). We still think her surgery was a true miracle, though :) She is generally so much happier, so much more interactive, and so much stronger than she was before surgery. And, best of all, she's had no more strokes, or stroke-like incidences, which is really what the surgery was for. Jenny |
