Title: Reminder....
Post by mg12061 on Oct 6th, 2006 at 9:41am
I know it's been discussed as to wether MM patients need the flu shot, but One group that IS on the list that Dr's have is any of the child under 18 who are on asprin therapy. We just got our appt. for the whole family to get ours.Last year because of the shortage only Kathleen and I got it,Kathleen because of the asprin and myself because of asthma.Just a friendly reminder in case you forgot it's that time of year again.

WHY?

and if you're over 18?

I've never had a flu shot, but I was thinking it might be worth it

Any child under 18 and on asprin therapy, who were to get the flu is put at risk for gettting Reye's Syndrome(here's a link.... http://www.reyessyndrome.org/ )a very seriouse often deadly disease that affects the brain among other organs. It's certainly a risk I'de like to lessen for Kathleen. The shot doesn't mean she won't get the flu but it's at least some protection.Other than that if your older than 18 I suppose it's an individual option.I'de be concerned about getting the flu if I were the one with MM just because I wouldn't want o risk being THAT sick ,if I could protect myslef.I can't imagine that a dr. would deny a patient with MM the flu shot.I get the flu shot also because I have asthma. We actually will be getting it for the whole family this year because there isn't a shortage (Kahtleen's Primary care Dr. is very cautious)and it was offered by Kahtleen's Dr.Last year when there was a shortage only Kahtleen and I got it,and all they could offer me was the nasal spray which by the way is a live virus so you do risk actually getting a mild case of the flu.The shot on the other hand is NOT a live virus and can't cause the flu.

I can't speak for anyone else but when Kathleen gets a fever she's really down and out.She cries a lot and her breathing gets quick and heavy, and she won't drink(and I can't make her understand she NEEDS to),I've gotten prettty scared a couple of times when she was sick.AND on top of all of that, all this stuff that happnes to her can aslo be signs of Reye's Syndrome so,how do you know if that's what it's become??? Luckily she's pretty healthy.I hope your feeling better and your not getting the Flu!!!!

I get my flu shots through work.  I work for a company that owns and operates retirement communities - elderly are on the list of high priority.  Anyway, my company knows about my surgeries, of course, so I get on the priority list in cases when the serum is short.  I don't know about anyone else, but I get TIA's when my fever gets high.
