Dear Moody,

When I had my stroke (9 years ago), it took me 2 months before I could write a short thank you note in less than a couple of hours, then rewrite it because it sounded terrible.  Once I wrote a note, put it in the mail, and got it sent back to me the next week because I had the wrong address on it!!  I still remember how totally frustrating & angry I was at the time.  Now, after all these years, I still take a long time to write, type with 1 or 2 fingers,  & don't respond to very many posts~~ mostly just read..  It has gotten 100X  better after all these years.
Good luck to you... it takes a long time for our brains to rewire themselves.  Learning how read again, doing crossword and other puzzles (where the answers are in the back of the book) helped me regain some abilities.  My patience had had to work overtime though.

I love your sense of humor!!! ;;D  At least that's working terrifically!! [smiley=laugh.gif]   deb

i loved the neuropsych test!!! i'm still revelling in the results and way way too c0cky from the report but ah well :) it's nice to have the positivity!

i was really committed and dedicated to my personal rehab though.. as my biggest issues post-strokes were my memory and logic.... which previously were areas i'd been quite skilled in...
so yeah i went nuts on puzzles like sudoku, and also kept a little notebook with me at all times entitled "what i did today" - as i had mostly mid-term memory issues... and at the end of everyday i'd force myself to recall and write down what i'd done, and then every morning i'd read what i'd done the previous day, to refresh... also just having another little notebook for short-term notes and tasks is very helpful.. and anyway, you feel a bit like a writer... mysterious and such... ;)

the brain is amazing.. it can be re-trained to learn absolutely everything!

my neuro-psych conclusion summary was:
- general intellectual ability in the superior range
- memory performances ranged from average to high average
- superior problem solving, planning and organisational skills
- excellent "working memory" skills

and i did eventually get that damn memory back to the "excellent" range... and this was all within 7 months of my first stroke.. timeframe including bilateral surgeries... so basically it does take a bit of time.. but you can do it if you're persistent and committed with rehab-like tasks... :)

One thing I think we all could probably agree on is "the brain is amazing".Kathleen had several strokes, one very severe between her surgeries.About a month after the strokes and surgery she was tested, and basically she couldn't even put a 2 piece puzzle together. She couldn't follow simple one step directions and had lost her speech including all the good stuff she had learned like ABC's colors shapes etc. all that great pre school stuff.Well wihtin months she had gotten back some of that and, she's still recovering.I see little things in her memory getting better. She now remembers where she put things the day before(much better even than myself),remembers what she did in school and tells me about it,She's reading and getting better answering questions about what she read, and just recently making inferences about things not just memorized concrete stuff. In a nut shell she just seems "sharper" every year that passes.that's not even mentioning all the physical gians she's had to make too.the brain is amazing given the time and right tools I would never give up on recovery.I feel like for Kathleen every day is "rehab".

I don't know if this applies but my daughter Paige has been having problems lately. She will be 5 next month and has had surgeries on both sides.(The most recent was in December). She has had 3 strokes(the last one was the night after her last surgery). Her surgeon said that we might begin to see behavior problems since she has had a stroke in the same area on both sides of the brain and that she might have learning problems when she starts school.Lately,I have had alot of trouble with her listening, she is getting into things that she never did before, and when I try to work with her on her ABCs and numbers, she shows no desire to learn.I have tried many different disciplinary actions with her and she just keeps getting worse. It seems as though she is regressing instead of progressing emotionally. This has been 10x worse than when she went through her "terrible 2s".Her surgeon was planning on doing the neuro psych testing in about 6 months after her surgery.I have contacted him about this and I am planning on talking with her pediatrician about this.I am hoping that there is something that can be done to help her so we can get it under control before she starts school.I'm sure this hasn't helped any but I would love to know if anyone else has encountered the same problems after their strokes and/or surgeries.Thank you.
