I was just watching the Today Show and the topic was aspirin. The doctor said children should never take aspirin. Jennifer takes an apirin a day-she's 3 years old. Although the doctor wasn't talking about MMD she said children are as risk of developing other diseases. Okay, so, I just needed some advice :-/

Michelle-

I am always cautious when someone uses difinitive words like "Never." People can take it out of context and, as we all know, don't always know the whole story! I doubt this doctor took into consideration or even heard of MM, I hate to say. Anyway, there is a risk of children under a certain age taking aspirin. Reye's syndrome..is associated with aspirin consumption by children with viral diseases such as chicken pox.

According to Dr. Scott:

The small risk of Reye's Syndrome -- an inflammatory swelling of the brain following chicken pox infection when aspirin is given -- is outweighed by the consistent long-term benefit of the aspirin administration. (http://www.boston-neurosurg.org/amphitheater/online.html)

That's exactly it.A couple months after surgery there was an outbreak of chiclen pox at ehr school so I ahd her tested to see if she ad the imunity to it since she ahd the vaccine.Well she didn't aparently the shot wore off or never took so I was forced to keep ehr home until it passed.We then revaccinated ehr and tested to be sure it worked this time and it did.That's also the reason she gets the flu shot every year because it's considered a seriouse virus and puts ehr at risk for Reye's Syndrome.

My husband is a Pediatrician and on a few occasions has given asprin to "our" children when the situation warranted.

However, we predominately use Tylenol with our kids... and ALWAYS Tylenol for any fever related illness.

Rye Syndrome I believe is the biggest risk. If you give asprin for fever without knowing the cause of the fever....that is just dangerous. In your situation....it is not for fever...it is for management. I would however, ask the doctor if you should avoid the asprin therapy when she presents a cold or flu.
