Title: Going to CA Jan 1st
Post by lorabeas on Dec 18th, 2007 at 11:51pm
Meadow's appt is just right around the corner. I get butterflies in my stomach every time I think about it!

We are scheduled to leave Jan 1st. She will begin a series of test that week...and her first surgery is set for Jan 8th.

Does anyone have any suggestions for transportation modes while there??

Also, we are flying into San Francisco...
I found a public transportation called the "Caltrain." I think that will get us into Palo Alto.  Anyone familiar?? Did anyone else fly into San Fran?

Palo Alto temperature for the month of Jan??

If anyone has any suggestions or familiar with the area....anything is appreciated!!!

Thanks!!!
Lora

Hi Lora

Butterflies are normal for this trip.
There is a great support  team at Stanford!

You can call Dr. Steinbergs office and ask for Micheal Thomas MSW or Jill McInnis for information on travel and motels around the Stanford area.

They are very helpful!

My thoughts and blessings are with you.
You will be the greatest of hands.

Hi Lora,
I was in Stanford for my surgeries about 6 weeks ago. The weather was sunny and mild at that time, but some of the mornings were a bit nippy, so I would bring warm coats.
There is a list of nearby lodging on this web site. Some offer a free shuttle service to Stanford Medical Center. My family stayed at the Best Western Riviera because it was so near to the hospital (about a mile). It was bright, and clean and the staff were friendly. This is the off-season so you should get a good rate.

15 El Camino Real, Menlo Park - (650) 321-8772
We flew into San Jose and rented a car at the airport, so didn't need to rely on a shuttle. Driving makes it easier to get around to restaurants and shopping and you can get to the hospital at any hour of the day or night. It's only a 30 minute drive to Half Moon Bay on the coast which makes a great excursion. There is a plethora of restaurant on El Camino Real and the hospital cafeteria was pretty good - we ate a lot of meals right there.
There is a Ronal McDonald's House at Stanford that is very near to the hospital. The telephone number is  (650) 470-6000. The website is http://www.ronaldhouse-stanford.org/about/accommodations.html
If they have a room available, that would be a good environment for children. The charge is only $10 per night and they provide a shuttle service to the hospital.
You and your family will be in my prayers. Be comforted by the fact that Meadow is in the best of hands - Dr. Steinberg, his staff, and all of the caregivers at Stanford are truly amazing.
