Title: Allergies/Asthma
Post by Jan on Mar 25th, 2008 at 9:39pm
I hope someone can help me.... [smiley=confused2.gif]
Living in Hawaii is great, unfortunately, I did know that I had hayfever until I went for my surgeries in April a couple of years back.  I ended up with hayfever from the pollen that was inside of the hospital.

Since we really do not have "seasons", my allergies don't really bother me too much. My question is....does anyone take any thing to relieve the sniffles and the itchy/teary eyes that come along with hayfever?  Here in Hawaii we have tradewinds and Kona winds.  Tradewinds are our normal wind pattern (easterly) and Kona winds are the abnormal wind pattern (westerly).  Well, when the wind pattern shifts from trades to konas, I have this really bad allergy that seems more like asthma (wheezing, sneezing, coughing...etc).  I'm not the only one that suffers like this... [smiley=frown.gif]
Anyone out there with some home remedies???  I've tried hot tea with lemon....saline nasal spray....a vaporizor....HELP ME, PLEASE!!

Hey, Jan.

I know this will sound wierd - but since my girls' surgeries, I've been willing to try almost anything to get rid of their allergy/cold symptoms without actual cold meds.  My aunt sent me an email about this, and I was very skeptical, but it actually worked!  Before you go to bed, slather vicks vaporub generously on the BOTTOM OF YOUR FEET!!  Then wear white socks over them (white, so that the color dye of colored socks won't absorb into the vicks).  Do it every night that you're having the symptoms.  Strangely enough, I could not find anything that would stop my girls from coughing themselves awake during the night - but this worked!

I hope it helps!  Feel better!
Kristen

Hi Jan,

Kevin (Cubbie) takes Benadryl for his seasonal allergies.  He says the Benadryl doesn't raise his blood pressure and it also lets him sleep. He checked with his doctor to be sure it was ok for him to take the Benadryl.

Check with your doctor to determine if Benadryl is ok for you to take. Some antihistamines will raise blood pressure and some OTC meds react differently on different people depending on their condition and may also interact with other drugs. So please check with your doctor!

Hope you get some relief from your hayfever soon!

Big hugs,

Lore

Thanks Kristen and Lore....

I've taken benedryl but, it makes me too drowsy while I'm at work and unfortunately, if I take it before bed, I get and adverse reaction....I can't sleep due to the antihistimine.  I've heard about smearing Vicks vaporub under your feet....at least I know now that it actually works!!  Thank you for your suggestions....I appreciate it!!

Lore....can't wait to see you again!!  Both Alan and I are coming to the Las Vegas Reunion.  Kristen...I'm hoping that I'll be able to meet you soon!!

Much Aloha & Mahalo,
Jan
