Title: Epilepsy and Moyamoya Post by PaulF on Sep 7th, 2008 at 3:35pm
I'm curious to hear from other adults who have Moyamoya and a history of epilepsy. I was diagnosed with (right) temporal lobe epilepsy in 2004, at which time I was suffering primarily simple and complex partial seizures.
I did not respond to drugs and underwent a right hippocampal resection in June, 2006. During testing and evaluation prior to surgery, I underwent an angiogram, at which time Moyamoya characteristics were discovered in the right hemisphere only of my brain. My surgery was very successful in the sense that instead of clusters of 6-7 seizures each month, I've had isolated breakthrough episodes, seven since December 2006. I continue to take two AED meds, Keppra and Lamictal. CTA imaging since my initial angiogram does not indicate that the Moyamoya characterstics have progressed any further, but my neurologist, surgeon, and I all wonder if the continued breakthrough seizures might in some way be a cause of or linked to the Moyamoya. Does anyone know of any causal link for adults? |

Hi Paul, [smiley=wave.gif] Welcome to our MM family!
I really don’t know how to explain MM and epilepsy together, except to say, we see MMD misdiagnosed sooooooo often, that it makes me question any diagnosis of epilepsy with MMD in the first place, because as I understand it, epilepsy is defined, as a neurological condition that produces brief disturbances in the normal electrical functions of the brain. Well, MMD is a condition that can produce those episodes, so do you call it epilepsy at all, when MMD may in fact may be the cause of those seizures? See what I mean? Many MM patients suffer seizures, before and after diagnosis and surgery, but it doesn’t necessarily mean they should be diagnosed with epilepsy. Over 50% of the time, the cause of epilepsy is unknown, so when a person that is diagnosed as having epilepsy because they are having repeated seizures, it could simply be MMD and the reason for those episodes. I hope that made sense. I get all beflustered trying to understand it myself, let alone try to explain what I mean…LOL Mar |
