Title: License? Post by amy1992 on Sep 29th, 2008 at 2:10am
I had a stroke in April, since then I have had small seizures like arm numbness and not being able talk. They put me on seizure meds., which I have never had before. Today I had a grandmal sezure in WalMart. I lost consciousness for a few minutes and my mother called 911. They took me to ER and increased siezure meds.. They told me I have a restriction on my license. I can't drive for 6 months or until a dr. releases me. Has anone ever had this done to them? Will Dr. Steinberg release release me after having the surgery because the seizures are from the MoyaMoya. I am a single mother of 3 children and have a full time job, how can I not drive for 6 months? I understand before the surgery, but why after??

My daughter had her surgery two years ago and unfortuantely still has seizures. I heard if you're seizure free for 1 year you can get your license back.

Yes I did....I dont know how it works in your state, but in mine (SC) if you lose conscience or bodily control (mostly for reasons of seizure activity) then you are deemed unable to drive for up to 6 months. The reason that is, is because you are looked at as a liability. Lets say your driving along one day and you have another seizure. MANY bad things could happen as a result...especially if your precious ones were in the car with you. Also...IF you drive before you have been released to do so...and you have an accident...whether it was your fault or not...it will be ruled your fault either way because you were not supposed to be driving.
I had to have my father and wife drive me everywhere I needed to go...including work. I had to wait the full 6 months...I dont know why the doctor wouldnt release me. I've been released to drive since April...which was my 6 months. I have also been on Keppra (anti-seizure) since. I cant say I totally understand your situation due to your being a single mother...but I do sympathize. The best thing you can do in this situation...or any situation for that matter is pray. Pray everyday...pray hard, and pray sincerely. I've noticed that we as a society get into this rut of "when all else fails...pray." Well I say...before all else fails...pray. Prayer should never be our last ditch effort. It should never be: "Well I've tried everything else, I might as well pray." God always makes a way for things to work out. Please know that I will be praying for you as well. |

I did got my lisence hang up by my neurologist, I don't have seizures but have memory lost, and I haven't drive for almost 2 yrs, I feel your pain, when we have problem if some thing happen while we drive, not only we get hurt, we hurt love one on the car and hurt other out there on the road, it will be our fault not matter what because we have been restriction by doctor. I believe the neurosurgeon will not release us, it is neurologist or family doctor, in my case, my neurologist is, I have been drive again now but every year DMV medical department will send paper home for my doctor information about my health and sign ok for me to drive.
You have my sympathy, I have 3 kids to drive around but I have to ask family and friends to help, my husband at work so I can't used him. Take care Kieu |
