Title: Annual MRI/Angiogram??????
Post by chele on Oct 19th, 2008 at 1:55pm
I am a MoyaMoya patient.  I had 2 strokes one year ago, and was daignosed with MoyaMoya.  Since then I have undergone to surgery's.  In Oct. 2007 I had a direct/indirect/burring a whole in my skull on the right side. In Nov. 2007 I underwent the 2nd surgery on the left side, only a direct/indirect.  Is it normal to have a annual follow-up MRI and Angiogram? :-/

OH yes! Without a doubt. It’s smart! Your doctors have to be sure the surgery was successful and evaluate the before and after results of blood flow and many other issues. For example, with the indirect surgery, the testing will show if there is new collateral growth, which is essential. This is a rare disease and testing will also help them learn more about MMD itself and the long term results. I think follow up testing is essential to assure success.

I had a 6 week post surgery follow up with my surgeon (no angio), and then a 1 year angio.  Dr. Scott was pleased with the result.  I don't have to go back again unless I become symptomatic.  He told me he does yearly follow-ups with the little ones....I guess because they are still growing.  I do email Dr. Scott once a year, however, to let him know how I'm doing.  Needless to say, I pay close attention to what my body tells me!

I had STA-MCA bypass surgery on the left side on July 3, 2008. After that I had a six week follow, and am scheduled for my bi-annual follow up in March. My doctor said that I will need to have a CT scan and 'doppler' test twice a year likely for the rest of my life. His concern is that my Asian heritage and the dramatic and sudden decline in my perfect health that led to my surgery may also affect the right side very quickly too.
