Title: Playing musical instruments after surgery Post by hrsridermom on Nov 19th, 2008 at 9:09am
Does anyone have any information about how long after surgery before patients can get back to playing musical instruments? Destin plays clarinet in band and I read someplace that there may be problems with those sort of instruments due to hyperventilation.

Hi,
I think it all depends on each particular case. For example, if you only had surgery on one side, knowing this is a progressive disease, there would always be risks there of improper blood flow to the brain and therefore risky. There are so many individual factors with each MM patient as well, like their blood pressure or if they’re having TIA’s etc. that would put them at a higher risk for problems if they played that kind of instrument, but if someone had successful surgeries, and the proper follow-up testing to be sure they were getting the proper blood flow, and the doctor gave the ok, that’s the only way I would play any kind of wind instrument with MMD. I don’t know if this will help, but I remembered it being discussed a few years ago. Here’s the thread: MM and Musical Instruments: http://www.moyamoya.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1158451864 Mar |

I also remember that thres Mar mentioned. I beleive you can do anything but you MUST payatention to your body!!! If it hurts stop doing it. If you feel you need to stop then stop doing that activity. I am workig out alot more but there are days when i can go 45 minutes with out a rest but then ther are days when i can only do 10 minutes or none at all. just listen to your body or in your case your son's. Look for signs of discomfort.
I hope this helps Becky |
