Title: Still haveing problems even though surgerys sucess Post by shirley on Jan 23rd, 2009 at 1:16pm
My daughter had surgery done on both sides of her brain and they say she has good oxygen flow now much better then before. Problem, she's still haveing spells. Last night she fell over backwards and blacked out. She wants to know if others who have had sucessful surgerys are haveing different things happening also. Please contact me and let me know your story it may help her. Thank You

Like it’s being discussed on another recent thread: http://www.moyamoya.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1232716391 it could possibly be a type of seizure. There are a wide variety of possible symptoms of seizures, depending on what parts of the brain are involved, and seizures after successful surgery seems to be a common thing with MMD. As I explained on another post, my neice had a similar incident a year or so after surgery. I think a MM patients' brain is extremely sensitive.
I would have tests done to be safe. If it was a seizure, hopefully medications or an adjustment of seizure medications can help her. Mar |

I remember having "spells" after my surgeries too. I asked Dr. Steinberg about it and he said that it is possible to have them for up to a year after surgery. That said, that was for my case even with my direct bypass. I agree with Mar though, get her checked out to be safe, but I think it is a "normal" occurance. Hope that helped!

Hi Shirley,
Blackouts can occur from a number of different causes. It's possible your daughter's spells are unrelated to moyamoya. As an example, my brother experienced such spells, and in his case, the spells were related to a particular drug he was taking for something other than moyamoya. I also noticed my brother having similar symptoms when his blood pressure got too low. I'm not suggesting these are the reasons your daughter is experieincing blackouts. Knowing your daughter has moyamoya, and has had two bypass surgeries, I would not ignore the spells. I would suggest your daughter see her doctor sooner than later to uncover the cause of her blackouts. Keep us posted. Lore |
