Title: Allergic reaction Post by masonsmom on Jun 27th, 2009 at 12:44am
Soooo on top of everything going on lately, I am having an allergic reaction to an antibiotic i have been taking for 5 days. I spent 5 hours in the er tonight... they gave me benedryl (sp) and some steroid through an IV.
They sent me home but the rash is getting worse I think. Has anyone heard if Predisone(a steroid) or benedryl are harmful for MM patients??? THanks sooooo much for your response! You all are great! |

I have taken prednisone but not recently. I have found that the use of any steroids really makes my symptoms worse, even though I use to have successful treatment with them. I know of one other member here who reported being on that steroid just last week for treatment of headache. This did not make any sense to me as I thought MM was primarily non- inflammatory. She reported it made her crabby! I certainly hope you are not itching, as that will definitely make the rash worse. I know, easy to say when you are not the one with the rash! In my experience, if the reaction didn't show for 5 days, you will have a buildup of that medication and it may get worse before it gets better. At least that was my personal experience. I used topical cortisone cream, and lots of it, as it did have a somewhat cooling effect, and I did take benadryl, however I do not think that is generally recommended. I do hope you start seeing some improvement, and are able to get some sleep and stay well hydrated.

They give you steroids post surgery so I do not see that the prednisone should be an issue. In fact the Decadron they give you post surgery is in the same family as prednisone just much stronger. I take Benadryl for allergies because I have tons. I do not take it daily or extremely often though. However it does give me more Moyamoya symptoms if I do not hydrate because it is an antihistamine and has a drying effect. So my advice would be to drink plenty of fluids which is something you are supposed to do anyway. I hope that helps.

Hi ~
Hope that by now your reaction is subsiding. I too am allergic to some anti-biotic.s. Also I'm horribly allergic to the contrast material used in angiograms. At my last check up (a few yrs ago at Stanford) Did my usual pre and post test benaryl but still my skin broke out (my hands puffed up and began to seep), itched, most of my skin seemed to erupt, so went back to see the nurse at Stanford. She increased my benadryl. It was a horrible experience as you can imagine. I usually have this itching but this was the worst. One could be allergic to banadryl, as one could be allergic to apples...you just never know. I personally haven't had a benadryl reaction. obviously it's been good for me personally. The point here is that folks who go thru this type of experience (or any medical gig) should get to a doctor, and keep them informed of what's going on. Have it in your charts. Let them know how things are for you. Which is what you did. It's a scary thing. Again, hope you're better and thanks for the opportunity to share this, Linda (LA) |
