Title: alcholol??
Post by masonsmom on Aug 26th, 2009 at 2:59pm
So ... I am just curious...  I know this might seem like a stupid question... but it has crossed my mind.

How bad is it to have an occasional drink? (w/ MM)

When me and my husband go out on that once and a while date night, I would really like to have a drink or two.  But im always sooo scared that something bad my happen.  Everyone (meaning peers, who know nothing about MM) says oooh it will be fine.. its good, it will thin your blood!
Any thoughts on this topic would  be great...
has anyone acutally asked thier doctor?
Thanks!

I have always drank, before and after diagnosis. No doctor has ever cautioned me about drinking in relation to MM. In the last couple of years I have curtailed my drinking due to some liver issues, and I've cleaned up my act in other ways, losing 30 pounds, walking regularly, etc., and I feel much better about myself. For myself I won't stop drinking because I enjoy it. Alcohol does thin the blood, yes, so there may be a slightly higher risk for a hemorrhagic stroke, but not enough for me to worry about.

It depends on your meds.  I cannot drink at all with my seziure med.  Ask your doctor to be sure.  I do understand.  I have vodka in my pantry that I was to open so badly.  I guess it will be a Christmas gift to someone.  :D

I enjoyed toasting to anything I could think of to toast !

but,  am now on anti seizure medicine, and other meds, that preclude drinking.

I asked my neurologist if I could have a small glass of wine occasionally and was told it is ok...but the combination of the meds and the wine make me icky feeling.

This is defiantly something you ought to ask your neurologist about.

MM is a delicate issue and not something that friends, or people who don't know about how your body reacts to blood thinners (or any meds/alcohol), can casually talk about.

Congratulations on all the work you've done Meyhem! good job!

Cheers!

Linda

Good question. I've never been told NOT to drink. I never have had much interest in hard liquor, but I'd be really sad to learn that wine was forbidden ::). I have a glass with dinner just about every evening and occasionally a beer instead - a good northwest microbrew, of course. It's been nearly two years since my surgeries and so far no negative affects. But then my only medications are aspirin and Lipitor, so no negative interactions there. Think you've received good advice here about referring to your neurologist as we're each of us dealing with such a unique set of variables.

I asked my neurologest what he would recomend. I was told to enjoy a drink every now and agian. Don't drink to excess and never drink when i am taking medication that says don't drink, becasue it is a blood thinner. My recomendation is to ask your neourlogest.
