I had right side surgery EC-IC on 6-17. I am doing much better but was wondering if flying in an airliner has caused anyone problems. My wife and I want to go to Myrtle Beach soon. We always drive with me doing all of it (12 hours). We see a great deal from Youngstown to Myrtle Beach and wondered if a 2 hour flight might be the way to go. Befor calling my Dr.for permission to do either I was curious if pressue from an airliner would be advisable. I last flew to Houston in 2007 , long befor I knew i had this horrid disease.

Dear Larry,

I don't think flying is a problem. My daughter had to fly home 1 week after surgery (3 hour flight, plane change then 1.5 hour flight) and she did fine.

We were told that it's not a problem to fly.

I was told it would not be a problem. My last trip about 4 hours I had no issue. I have always felt the pressure in the plane but gum helps and being distracted with a in flight movie or great conversation or just sleeping through the flight helps too.

My son has flown many times since his surgery. The first time was a week after his second surgery, June 2003. He loves flying and is planning a trip this summer.

Hey Larry

Flying commercial shouldn't be a problem because the cabins are pressurised. I'm not sure flying a light aircraft is such a good idea.

Larry,

Dr. Sternburg told us even flying in a small unpressurized plane would be safe. Right after Tyler's surgery we had a family emergency and my brother said he would pick us up in his plane if needed. I checked with Dr. Sternburg first and he O.K.'ed it, however we didn't end up needing to go that route. So I can't tell you if it would make you feel weird or anything. Just passing on what I was told.

I should have replied sooner but all went well with the flight from Youngstown,OH to Myrtle Beach SC. We were in the air for only a little more than an hour. I chewed gum on both flights and had no discomfort. I might add that the week of vacation at the ocean was very relaxing and much needed.
