Title: Hair Loss Post by azhurds on Sep 11th, 2010 at 12:56pm
My daughter has hair loss and she will get bald spots and then new hair will grow in. In the past week her hair is falling out like crazy. I sort of wonder if it has to do with all of the medical procedures she has had in the past 2 weeks. We talked to the pediatrician about it and her endocrinologist and both say it is Alopecia. I've heard that it is common in kids with Down Syndrome. Long story short we are being referred to a dermatologist to make sure it is not related to the moya-moya disease.
Does anyone know if hair loss can be related to moya-moya. And no it is not her thyroid. |

My daughter (now 16 yrs old) had some hair loss after her surfery. No bald spots but she was noticing a lot of hair falling out when she washed it and on her pillow. A friend recommended she take Biotin (in the vitamin section) and it seems to have helped. don't know if it was the vitamin or time but it made her feel better that she was being proactive.

The first year after my surgeries my hair was falling out quiet a lot. My hairdresser says she sees it a lot with women that had major surgery. She tends to feel it was all the toxins in the anesthesia and such, that need to be expelled. It sort of makes sense. It did stop for a while, but returned and was horribly coming out in droves throughout my 2nd-3rd yr post surgery. (I was afraid to wash my hair as it would be all over my hands and fingers!) Now, I am happy to report, at my 4th yr post surgery....my hair is no longer coming out and seems quite normal now.
It certainly wouldn't hurt to consult a professional Dermatologist in these matters. (I did, and my blood work was fine...no real explanation ????) |

I just got out of EC/IC Surgury just under 4 weeks ago (mid-last month) and my hair started falling out too. I believe it could just be because of the surgury as I have started noticing my hair falling out less and less with each week. However, just to put your mind at rest, It sounds like a solid idea if you saw the dermitoligist. ;)

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for the advice and feedback. My daughter had a second appointment with a dermatologist, the second appointment as a follow up. About a year ago we were told she has a auto-immune disease called Alopecia and for whatever reason it is very aggressive at this time. My daughter today has a few strands of hair other than that she is completely bald and she has lost her hair in one month. Why? Know one really knows but there are a few suggestions. At least we know it is not related to her having moyamoya. On the other hand because she has moyamoya there is not much that can be done because most of the treatment at this young age is steroids and the doctor said she was not comfortable putting her on any steroids because of her having Moyamoya. I appreciate everyone's feedback and comments. I will definitely take note when ever my daughter has any type of procedures because the Alopecia can be triggered from stress and these procedures can be stressful on a little body. Thank you. Tish H. |
