Press Release

Renowned specialists of rare, progressive brain disease to speak at 5th annual gathering of patients and families.

Leading neurosurgeons from Stanford University Hospital and Children’s Hospital Boston to address surgical treatment, long-term outcome and current research concerning Moyamoya Disease.

Philadelphia, PA, April 28, 2011:  Moyamoya.com, established in 2003 to provide global support and access to information for those diagnosed with Moyamoya, celebrates their fifth gathering of patients and their families at the Crowne Plaza in downtown Philadelphia, PA on June 16 - 20, 2011 where they will welcome Dr. R. Michael Scott (Children’s Hospital Boston), Dr. Edward Smith (Children’s Hospital Boston) and Dr. Gary Steinberg (Stanford University Hospital).

The doctors will speak at an informative session on Saturday, June 18, 2011 beginning at 9:30am.  Dr. Steinberg has performed approximately 800 revascularization procedures for Moyamoya, making his case experience with the disease one of the largest in the world while Dr. Scott and his colleague Dr. Smith have treated more than 300 patients, primarily children, from 1985 to the present.

Topics discussed at Saturday’s session will include the direct and in-direct methods of revascularization surgery and the current research being conducted by both Children’s Hospital Boston and the Stanford Moyamoya Center.  A special presentation to the doctors will follow.

Moyamoya Disease is considered to be one of the rarest forms of cerebrovascular disorders, affecting less than 200,000 people in the United States.  The cause is unknown.  For more information about Moyamoya, please visit http://www.moyamoya.com.

This is all very excited. Being an Australian and a very broke student, I will not be able to attend. But will any of it be videoed? I would be very keen to hear the talks from the doctors.
