Title: Stenting as treatment?
Post by kelly on Sep 22nd, 2011 at 11:26am
Hi My name is Kelly and I was diagnosed with Moyamoya last friday. I had a bad migraine and TIA symptoms that let to me having an MRI/MRA.  I saw my neurologist this morning who recomended having an angioram with the possibilty of stenting the internal carotid, has anyone had that treatment recommended? Do the docs always recommend conservative treatment first?? I have had my scans sent to Standford and am waiting to hear from them.
I am at least glad that the DR realized that Lancaster PA is not the place to have the angio done and wants me to go to philly. Any thougths would be appreciated

kelly,
Welcome to the family. I am sorry you have to be here but this is the best place for community knolage and to ask questions.

My Nurologest said Stenting is very bad for MM. MM is where your blood vessels walls are very thin. Stents use the walls of the vessels to latch onto so it is not free floating around your body. Since MMers have very thin walls there is not much for the stent to grab a hold of so it may become disloged and free float. The free floating piece of metal  may get loged in something that may be more harmful.

I am very happy you sent your infromation to Stanford. I think there is a MM specialest in Philly. I highly recomend seeing a MM specialest becasue they will be able to determine the right kind of surgery you will need to have to get your bolld flowing properly agian. Yes I said surgery, but don't be scared. Most of everyone on this sight has had one of the revasularzation surgerys themselves or a child or someone they know.

I hope this helps,
Please keep is posted with your progress.

Thanks for yor response! From what I have been reading, I didnt think stenting was an option.I knew surgery was the bet possible treatment, it is just a matter of where to have it done and convincing my neurologist that it needs to be done!!if he doesn't agree I will get a second opinion! This site has been wonderful and a great source of support and information. :)

Welcome,
I to came here looking for answers and hope. I have since had my first STA-MCA bypass at Swedish Hospital with Dr Newell just six weeks ago. I will be having my second in December. Moya moya is a scary diagnosis but, with the right doctor and treatment you can get thru it. This site is a great resource for support and info. I will help in any way I can.

This is a publication of the results from Stanford's study on angioplasty and stenting as a treatment option for moyamoya Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register.  It is powerful ammunition to use with any neurologist who suggests using this as a treatment option.  It was the recommended treatment for me prior to this study being published.  Thankfully I spoke to Dr. Steinberg and had an STA-MCA bypass.
