Title: Having kids after diagnosed with Moya Moya
Post by Kaitlyn on Oct 17th, 2011 at 9:46am
I was just wondering if anyone knew the possibilites of conceiving children after being diagnosed with Moya Moya! It has been 5-6 years since I had both my surgeries and I'm living a healthy life now, no problems since the surgery! Just wondering if anyone knew if people with MMD were able to not only concieve children but, have a healthy preganancy and labor! And what the chances of passing it on to your children was?If anyone knows anything please let me know!

Hi Kaitlyn,  I found this on one of the older posts.  I just searched "pregnancy" and found it.

" Can women get pregnant with moyamoya?
There are no pregnancy restrictions after surgical revascularization to treat moyamoya. Patients are asked to stay on their aspirin, and to have their obstetrician work with our team to ensure open communication is maintained. There are no specific restrictions for labor and delivery. Normal vaginal delivery is fine when considering the history of moyamoya."

I was told that when I go to have children then I also have no restrictions. My OB and my neurologist have discussed a c-section instead on natural birth but that is in my case. My OB wanted to make sure that his recomindations for the birth control I am on was compatable with the MM so they have had an open dialogue since my stroke.

I would like to say that eveyones MM is slightly different and I am not a doctor. I hope this helped.

I had my daughter a year after the surgeries and she came out fine (other than being a little diva :D).  The docs did not want me to have natural birth due to the pushing involved and how that may be a strain on my condition.  Because the condition was so rare, and no one in San Antonio, TX could treat it or even knew anything about it, when I had to go in for emergency c section due to Clampsia (having a seizure related to high blood pressure I have had all of my life) the doctor chose to induce a coma (because of the seizure).  Had I listened to my OBGYN and started bedrest two weeks earlier, then the coma thing would have never happened.  I hope this helps.

One of the neurosurgeon that we spoke with said that there are no restrictions on birth.  We did ask what the chances of passing MM on to my childrens children would be and he said there is a 50/50 chance for either of my children to pass it on to their kids even though my daughter is the only one that has been diagnosed with it.
