Title: Anyone have a kid with moyamoya who plays flute?
Post by Lmom on Nov 25th, 2011 at 7:47pm
Hi - My daughter has MM and is playing the flute in band.  She gets light headed if she plays for more than about 10 minutes.  Anyone have this experience?  Thanks!

My daughter plays the Clarinet.  She sometimes gets tired and she'll just take a break when she does.  She's first chair this year and going to Tri-state honor band at FSU next week.  I didn't have the heart to tell her she couldn't play.  Her surgeon said she could...just to take it slow after the surgery.  she knows her body and she paces herself.

My daughter plays the recorder at school and takes piano and voice lessons. Most of the time she is fine but she has had an an episode of weakness and tingling while playing recorder and once while holding a note during voice lessons. She rested, drank some water each time and was fine....though we always advise our medical team of what happenened.

Temporary Paralysis following hyper ventilation is a specific symtom of Moya Moya. Both my daughter and I experienced this. As a child, I would become paralyzed for a few minutes on the left side where I could not stand or move my arm. This would be brought on by whistling, crying, blowing up balloons etc.. My daughter fell down due to this paralysis after  playing the clarinet.

All these activities - blowing up balloons, wind instruments etc lower the body's CO2 levels which reduces cerebral perfusion (brain blood flow), not a good thing when the blood flow is already compromised.  I guess everyone has to have their own risk/benefit view of things.  I don't know if the same things are a problem post successful surgery? My daughter has not had surgery yet.

I play the flute and I have moyamoya, I get light headed, but once I get that light headed feeling I stop, relax til it goes away, then start up again. I haven't had any major issues with it.

Thank you all for responding.  Band is the one subject going well at school this year, so I think we will continue but tell her to take a break if she gets light headed, relax, have a drink of water and go on when she is ready!

Thanks
