Hi Kevin & Welcome!

I usually fly into San Jose (SJC) because it is smaller, easier and the people are nicer- just a much more pleasant experience in general in my opinion- but you can also fly into San Francisco (SFO).  They are about equal distance to the hospital.  Then there is Oakland airport which is further than the other two from Palo Alto but it's another option.  It sounded like you were asking about how to get to and from the airport to the hospital but I usually rent a car at the airport so I don't know how much it would be if you had to take a cab from either aiport.  I also don't know a thing if you are considering bus transit (or other means of transport) to the hospital from there.   You might want to call each of the two airports and inquire about that if I'm reading your posts correctly.  Otherwise,  I was just looking up airfares tonight and I found that, as of right now anyway, the cheapest flights are into San Fran (from IL in October) on American (aa.com) but usually it's cheaper for me to fly into San Jose.  You really need to look around and it changes drastically from day to day.   Anyway, San Fran and San Jose are the two main airports you'll probably want to consider.

I'm so excited for you that you were approved by your insurance for Stanford!  When will you be going?  I am *supposed* to be there in mid to late October but that's not set in stone yet.

Lisa

Kevin,
If you can rent a car it would be easier. I took a cab from SFO to Palo Alto and it cost $90. The area has a free bus, but you might end up having to go to your appointments a few hours early  :-/.  Also depending on where you stay, you could catch a shuttle from your hotel to the hospital, again you might have to go early.

I hope this helped some.
