Title: Moyamoya & Alcohol Consumption
Post by Shan on Dec 5th, 2005 at 11:34pm
Just wondering... What advice, if any, have you received from your neurologist/neurosurgeon regarding the consumption of alcoholic beverages while being diagnosed/treated with moyamoya?  I was thinking that alcoholic beverages would be discouraged for the mere fact that the medications we take shouldn't be taken with alcohol, but please let me know what you've been advised...  Thank you.

Take care,
Shan

Hi Shan,
I suppose the answer to this question is everything in moderation. I can't remember my neurosurgeon not saying to avoid alcohol, but I suppose it does come down to the medication that you are on etc. I am a Southern Comfort girl and indulge myself once in a while with no ill effects, but that is just me. I am not much of a regular drinker as Tony only has an occasional red wine and I dont drink for the sake of drinking.
Hope this helps - are you thinking about indulging in festive celebrations?!!

Best wishes
Moira

I second what Moira said!  Everything in moderation.  My docs never told me to avoid alcohol, but common sense tells me - yes, I'm taking medication - yes, alcohol makes you dehydrated.  Just be careful and listen to your body!

And drink lots of water when you do drink alcohol for the simple fact that Shari stated - alcohol dehydrates you.   :)

::)   Hi Shan,  My neuro surgeon said that it was perfectly OK to have an occasional glass of wine or a beer but that you must judge and see how it makes you feel.
The one big precaution is the meds that we're on.  You should never mix alcohol with any meds that have a sedative effect on you.  Also be cautious with antidepresants.   If you're in doubt, ask the doctor that prescribed it or call your pharmacist.

::)Now remember shan we're talking about moderate drinking not 6 Mai tais or Pinacoladas.

well personally i'm young.. social.. it's the festival season... hehe... i HAD to ask....

the reply i got was.. have one.... see how you feel.... (i'm still on dilantin too which does reccomend not to consume "much" alcohol while on that medication) - i may have add in the much!!

anyway so in the last week i've had a couple of drinks.... only once a night (thurs, sat sun - i camping!) and then 2 last night... and felt fine but didn't want anymore.... got a bit bloated and my tummy hurt but then again it's been a few months...

hey i have a question, does anyone know if we can go upside down??? i've had a craving to do handstands.....

Hi

I actually asked the question - reply was only one small drink per day - maximum ever two in one day !

This was also dependant on medications - on my current ones the answer was none !
(A small price to pay for a fit and healthy life !!)

Hi Emily!

I'm not sure about hanging around upside down but I did just ask my neurosurgeon if I could ride a roller coaster or fair rides (that go round and round--not that I want to ride those ones--roller coasters, yes!), anyhow he said I could try but he wouldn't suggest it because it would probably trigger TIAs.  Good thing I'm getting older and motion sickness more frequently! [smiley=laugh.gif]

Anyone else out there ride any fair rides since surgery?

Best wishes, Lorie

Hi gang:

I don't know if it's related, but I have very low tolerance with alcohol.  It seems to have gotten worse the last few years (the tolerance).  A couple of sips and I'm dizzy!  I wasn't told that I couldn't have alcohol (even with respect to my meds - which is essentially aspirin) but I'm wondering if anyone thinks the fact that there is less flow to the brain has anything to do with the low tolerance.  Just my thought that it might.  Of course hydratration and moderation are key.  Although my brother says I'm a wuss (he could have ten beers and be fine).    [smiley=laugh.gif]

Being a roller coaster fan, I was initially concerned about not being able to go on any anymore.  I haven't yet, but after hearing about Michelle, Tara and David's ride in Vegas, I'm totally up for it in Orlando.  Universal, here we come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  (Someone may want to keep an ambulance nearby, just in case - you're looking at the person who went to Six Flags five years ago on Motorola Day and rode the twin coasters ride six times without ever getting off!)   [smiley=laugh.gif]

Hi!

I drink a glass of wine about 3 times during the week and on Saturday, I usually go out with friends and have about 3 or 4 drinks.  I always feel fine but I’m only taking aspirin.  Before my surgery, when I was on plavix (strong blood thinner), I was a little hesitant about drinking.

Trina-
I think there are a lot of factors, when it comes to tolerance.  I have noticed if I haven’t been drinking in awhile (for 3 or 4 weeks) then my tolerance goes down.  So, if you haven’t been drinking, your tolerance would go down…but, that goes for everybody.  Tell your brother it’s okay to be a wuss ;-) of course men can drink more than women!

well....... as my surgeon said... have one, see how you feel.... maybe have 2.... i've had one... felt fine... but none of my friends let me have a second..... grrr.. ruining all my fun....

and as for hanging around upside down.. i REALLY want to do some handstands... and/or cartwheels, tumbling.. etc.... and no one (being my friends) will let me.... can't wait to ask the surgeon on friday....

things i also NEED to do::

- wear sunglasses
- sleep on my left side!!!!!!!!
- DRIVE ( i know i know, fat chance, but it's killing me!!)
- laugh without freaking out that i'll bust my stitches.....
hmmmm
this mm thing, even post-surgery and feeling fantastic is really getting to be a pain in the ass.....

Hi Em,
Hang in there - I was driving a week after I got home from both of my surgeries but don't tell anyone!!!
(Actually I wanted my hubby to go up to the chemist to get my headache killers and he couldn't straight away so I decided to go!!) I was told the reason not to drive was because of the anaesthetic as it stays in your system for a very long time (up to a year!!) and there was no way I was not driving for that long!! I was actually told not to drive for 6 weeks but I don't generally listen very well - I am a Gemini!!!

Anyway it seems that you are doing very well and making good progress. Good to see!
Regards Moira

i was told not to drive for 3 MONTHS after each procedure because of the risk of a seizure

man!!! i like your style... i am so having a serious talk to my surgeon this week..... not driving is really becoming not an option... if i could drive i candle handle not doing a lot of the other things (even handstands - boohoo...)

Emily,

Here's some additional ammunition - most of the Stanford patients are able to drive once their staples are removed (usually one week post-surgery).

Of course, each case is different, but thought you'd like to know the standard here.

Good luck!

Hi Emily,

Long story, but my daughter, Tara, has been a swimmer her entire life.  When my husband registered us on this site, we thought Tara would be the one posting, so he used a name that was applicable to her.  (It's also part of her email address.)  Anyway, it's got chlorine (chlorine is a chemical used in pools).

Be careful driving, o.k.?

Wow...thanks everyone for the replies.  Yes, I had to ask because we recently had a company party, and at my recent neuro appt, my doctor mentioned that he "may soon allow me to drink some alcohol."  I am usually not a drinker, but I guess I could be called a "social" drinker...depending on the occasion.  I was told that alcohol lowers your cholesterol too...  Wow!

Anyway, I did end up having a couple of rum & cokes, and like Trina, I did feel a little dizzy.  I was more worried about my medications and the alcohol mixture.  I no longer am taking Dilantin; however, I am taking Zonegran for seizures and Lipitor for cholesterol at night...

Well...hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy  holiday season!

Aloha,
Shan

p.s.  Someone send me some snow!!!  hee hee!  ;) ;;D

i just wanted to dig up this thread again... cause it seems to be an ongoing "issue" in my life (yes ok i'm 23 and very involved in the music scene and am out 4-5 nights a week and presently don't have a car to drive home!....) soo......

anyway, probably not the best advice for people out there but i've definitely had a few nights where i've had more than 2 drinks and (apart from the occasional morning-after-queaziness) i've been fine... but yeah i guess as a reminder it's just all about listening to your body... there's been times when i've definitely had 1 and then known tonight's-not-the-night-for-it...

anyway back to cold turkey now don't worry! too close to op time... time to get back in the mindframe!
