Title: need advice on financial options?
Post by rena8376 on Nov 17th, 2009 at 8:01pm
My daughter had her surgeries in March and June of 2008.  She is now almost 8 yrs old.  She is still having migraines and missing a lot of school in the afternoons. I can't work so the only income i have is the child support.  Can i get disability or SSI for her?

I would think you should be able to get Medicaid for her meds. Good Luck!

Hi Rena,

Children younger than 18 can get SSI if they qualify under the SSI conditions such as Down Syndrome, Blindness, Deafness, MS and severe mental retardation.

The amount of SSI varies from state to state because some states add to the SSI payments.

If you think your daughter may qualify for SSI, contact your local social Security office.

The other option is Medicaid as Christie mentioned. Depending on income and resources, your daughter may qualify for a number of different services and income under your state's Medicaid program. Medicaid also varies from state to state. Contact your local Job and family services state department, sometimes referred to as Social Services, to determine what services and income may be available to both you and your daughter.

We live in Oklahoma and my son has been on SSI for 2 years for different reasons.  He has Asperger's Syndrome.  There are programs available.

I joined this group because just over 2 weeks ago, my mom was taken to the hospital unrepsonsive.  We thought that it was her blood sugar. It wasn't.  She suffered a brain bleed . . . because of the MoyaMoya disease.  She was just diagnosed with it yesterday.  She had a permanent shunt placed Thursday and is somewhat back to normal, yet she isn't the same.

I have been a nurse for 15+ years and I have never heard of this before.  My mom has been my dads' caretaker since 1998 when he had a brain tumor taken out.  Now, we aren't sure what she is going to be like when she comes home and we are a little lost.  She is 61 years old.

I have started the SSI/social security application . . .she will be 62 in July.  I just wish we knew what to expect . . . .could someone help me with this?

Thanks,

Janet

If you don't qualify for Medicaid, which I think you should, there are many states that have CHIPs(Children Health Insurance Programs). I know when I was laid off, my wife and I didn't qualify for Medicaid but our children qualified for CHIP. Most medicines cost nothing or just a couple dollars. It was definitely a good thing to have. Also you may qualify for welfare and other financial aids available in your state.
