Title: Post Surgery
Post by bir on Jan 16th, 2012 at 10:35am
My son was operated on both sides in 2009 ST/MCA. The japanese doctors had not prescribed any medicines post operative. Back in India, in 2011 sep, he was prescriobed clobazom for hemibalismus movements in right arm. In dec 2011, blood thinners were started as he had a TIA. Soon he has developed vision problems. CT Scando not reveal any fresh infracts and bleeding. Recently he has developed coordination problems also. We are confused as the Clinical reports (CT Scans) are not showing any fresh infracts, so what is the cause of the present condition inour son. Also, we want to understand if moya moya vessels remain after a MMD surgery?

Bir,

This video will answer your question about the moyamoya vessels going away after successful surgery:

Sorry to hear your son is starting to have some difficulty.  If you would like Dr. Steinberg's contact information so you can get an opinion from someone who specializes in the treatment of moyamoya, let me know.

Hang in there!

DJ

The surgery was done by a moya moya specialist in Japan (Dr.Houkin) in 2009. My son had ST/MCA done on both sides. His stroke on left had left the left part in atrophy. Not to take a chance, Dr.Houkin had done surgery on right side too. He was surprised that there are fresh infracts three years after surgery in our son on the right side. Indian doctors are not sure on the moya moya trail and think these do not go away after surgery also. We understand that more surgery is not possible. The collatorals are growing well but the recent infract has been attributed to lack of blood supply. Also, blood thinners were not started in 2009. This was started in December 2011 when Aabir had a TIA and Indian doctors suggested that we should not take a chnce if symptomatically it appears that there is lack of blood supply which would have led to the TIA. We are concerned as the shadow infract has affected the optical area in the right side of brain. Are there any similar incidents shared in moya moya forum which can guide us on next steps to help in rehab or understand if similar shaow infracts can be avoided? he is now taking cloba and ecospirin75. Q _ Can vision area damage be minimised? What to do to avoid future infracts due to blood supply even if collatorals are adequate?
