Title: insomnia and headaches
Post by janis on Aug 20th, 2013 at 8:17pm
I have been recently diagnosed with moyamoya.  I see the surgeon in 2weeks.  I have had insomnia the past 2 months and bad headaches.  Is this common?  Thanks so much.

Hi Janice

I personally haven't heard of insomnia being an issue but the headaches could quite easily be a symptom.

Good luck

I've had insomnia since a year before I was diagnosed. They've talked about doing a sleep study, but have not had one yet. Headaches, (or head pains) I have every day.

Insomnia is a issue with Moya-Moya patients.  My daughter is 6 and has difficulty sleeping.  I called her neuro-surgeon a few months ago to ask about it and is there anything that can be done.  She told me that it is common with Moya-Moya but can give her Melatonin to help her sleep.

Odd thing, I also have trouble sleeping but according to Dr. Scott it is not common with MM patients. Well, reading this topic, he must be wrong.
I also take melatonin occasionally, I don't want to get addicted to the stuff.
But I need quite a high dose if I want to sleep well enough

I have insomnia, but it wavers in severity. I had it before my surgery, and still do. However, vivid dreams/nightmares accompanies it and sometimes forces me to wake up in a lot of discomfort every 20-30 minutes.

My son is 17 yrs post stroke/surgeries.  He began having migraines 4 mo b4 the stroke that got him dx'd. since he was only 3 1/2, he may have had others we just don't know about. he continued to have occasional migraines until at 16 y.o., the neuro put him on Depakote (it works). around 13 y.o., he told me he has mild headaches EVERY day! have found no relief for those although one Dr tho't it could be caused from mis-alignment of his shoulders ,neck, etc as a result of the hemi-paresis from the stroke. PT would help that.
