Title: prognosis after surgery
Post by bir on Feb 1st, 2014 at 10:59pm
Our son 7 yrs in 2008 had stroke; was diagnosed MMD in India; surgery done on both sides (STA/MCA and indirect) in Japan; He started school and academics slowly and has progressed well. His speech also was much improved.  His valporate was stopped in early 2011. During 2009 - 2011 we did notice gain in weight. were curious to know also if valporate causes similar issues ie. weight gain?. In Sep 2011, he had hemiballimus movement in one hand whih got over in a few days. MRI showed no fresh infract. Clobazom was started and continues. In December 2011 unfortunately, he had another infract affecting his perietal/occipetal lobe region (has affected his vision/coordination); Though rare to have subsequent strokes after surgeries, doctors diagnosis was that it might have been due to his "sudden growth" which resulted in more demand for blood supply than what the 2009 surgery led new collatorrals could provide. Hence they feel the next stroke happened in 2011 December. Blood thinners were started since then. in 2013 July - he had involuntary movements in one hand which progressed to both hands. Tetrabenazine tab 25 (Revocon) twice was started and helped control. November 2013 investigation tests suggest MMD not over and doctors recommend further surgery to ensure no further stroke particularly in areas which are ok in Brain including motor area. Wanted to know if similar cases (stroke after 3+ years of surgery due to demand/supply mismatch)  have been handled and what is the prognosis? Also are there sites which provide published data of MMD surgeries done in US, Europe, Japan with prognosis details?
