Medical Air Travel Resources

I've been able to do some research for air travel links.  If anyone finds any errors with URLs, telephone numbers etc. please let me know.  Thanks!  Lisa

Resources - Air Travel Links

Commercial Airlines
For flights of 1,000 miles or more, some commercial airlines provide free or discounted airfares to families in financial need. Northwest Airlines has a program that you can contact directly. Northwest Airlines KidCares provides free air travel for a child (18 or younger) and one parent or guardian to obtain medical treatment not available in their home area. KidCares travel must be requested by either a referring physician or a non-profit organization submitting the application on behalf of the child.

Phone: (612) 726-4206

For other commercial airlines, rather than calling the airlines directly, access their discount programs through a clearinghouse such as Mercy Medical Airlift.

Also see the National Patient Travel Center for “all available charitable or deep-discount airline ticket programs for patients and patient escorts,” and “a variety of services to those seeking a way to travel long-distances for specialized medical evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment.”

Private Planes
Flights of less than 1,000 miles are often handled by volunteer pilot's organizations.
These organizations arrange no-cost travel in private or corporate aircraft for the patient and accompanying family members. The aircraft used are generally small, with 4-6 seats.

The oldest of these is AirLifeLine, founded in 1978, with nearly 1,400 pilots who donate their time, aircraft, and fuel to make this air transportation service totally free of charge for patients who qualify.

or (916) 641-7800

Also see Angel Flight, which provides free air transportation by private aircraft to distant medical facilities for patients and their families in need.

In addition to air travel, here's a link for help with lodging.

ACCOMMODATIONS - National

The National Association of Hospital Hospitality Houses provides a directory of lodgings for families of hospital patients and/or hospital outpatients.

Great job Lisa this could truely save a life, I'm sure this will be the difference in someone getting to where there is a true MM surgeon and specialist instead of just settling because they cannot afford to get there. Superb work!!!
This should have a link of its own for easy access so no one misses it. Again excellent job Lisa.

Hello everyone Smiley I just found out some wonderful information on my quest to get to Stanford- If you call Gene with National Patient registery (?) he is able to help coordinate for us adults either free or discounted airfare to the surgeon.  You need to have a surgery date in place before he can get the wheels turning but I felt this is great news to pass along to other financially strapped families like myself this time of year.

When we flew with our son to Boston in '99 for his surgery, we received three plane tickets on TWA through the Make-a-Wish foundation.  Our pediatrician had to sign off on it.

When I think of Make-a-Wish, I think of vacations for terminally ill kids.  However, if an intervention is available, they will provide transportation to obtain that intervention.

Resources for family members obtained by nonrelati
Reply #9 - Jan 10th, 2007 at 12:14pm

Hi - this is my first post...I have been reading and reading for days...

you all seem so supportive and helpful

so here goes::::

I am on a power search to help our (a community of over 500) friend Killagrrrl (Donna) who "went down" on New Years Even, in SanFRan (she is from NYC) - and...yeah - you know what it was - or I wouldn't be here.

She is beautiful and strong and full of do it no matter what energy strength and spirit  - not to mention spit, and fight, and all of us pulling for her.

She has been "out" since New Years Eve.

She has visitors "out there" and cards letters and support from all over....

NOW...we need to find out how WE can help her family get there...

I have seen the posts - from 2004....and will continue to read/research...followup

BUT has anyone had any first hand experience with fundraising for this purpose OR getting resources for family members AS non-family memebers (ie:  we are trying to take some of the stress/strain/responsibility off of them).

Choked up all day long....

any help would be soooooooooooo appreciated!

SuzQ -- I am so sorry to hear about Donna, but I'm so glad you came to this website.  I saw her website, and I have two things to add:

1-you are in san francisco...have you gotten a second opinion,  or arranged for one?  Dr. Steinberg is right nearby in Palo Alto and Donna's website said that surgery was not recommended.  Not knowing her specifics, I would suggest getting a second opinion and being so close by, you could get one for free from someone who sees Moya Moya on a regular basis.

2-I know some resources out there (Mercy Flight) MAY give one family member a free ticket.  I used Mercy Flight and they allow it for patient and one companion.  But you could explain this unique situation.  Also, try appealing to airlines directly, sometimes they will provide deep discounts if you provide and press upon enough details of the situation.

I hope this helps - best wishes and keep us posted on Donna's status.

Hugs,
Trina

SusQ

My heart goes out to you and your family.  My sister, Patty, was dx with mm and had a wait-and-see doctors.  She had a massive stroke in 02/01.  It left her in a coma.  She has come along way, but still requires 14 hours a day in home care.  Patty was 41, 120 lbs of flying terror.  Please read all that you can.  If you want to email me.  Please do so.  We are all here for you.

My prayers are with you.

thank you thank you

I have passed the info on to the folks who are doing the organization.

I am actually in Turkey for the year with the State Department - like I said - our grrrl Donna has people all over the world who love her.

I sent her a voice recording last night that said I expect her to be on the stool at the bar to greet me in july when I come back!

Keep her  in your thoughts!!!!
