Just wondering... What advice, if any, have you received from your neurologist/neurosurgeon regarding the consumption of alcoholic beverages while being diagnosed/treated with moyamoya?  I was thinking that alcoholic beverages would be discouraged for the mere fact that the medications we take shouldn't be taken with alcohol, but please let me know what you've been advised...  Thank you.

I second what Moira said!  Everything in moderation.  My docs never told me to avoid alcohol, but common sense tells me - yes, I'm taking medication - yes, alcohol makes you dehydrated.  Just be careful and listen to your body!

   Hi Shan,  My neuro surgeon said that it was perfectly OK to have an occasional glass of wine or a beer but that you must judge and see how it makes you feel.
     The one big precaution is the meds that we're on.  You should never mix alcohol with any meds that have a sedative effect on you.  Also be cautious with antidepresants.   If you're in doubt, ask the doctor that prescribed it or call your pharmacist.

Now remember shan we're talking about moderate drinking not 6 Mai tais or Pinacoladas.

I actually asked the question - reply was only one small drink per day - maximum ever two in one day !

This was also dependant on medications - on my current ones the answer was none !
(A small price to pay for a fit and healthy life !!)

I don't know if it's related, but I have very low tolerance with alcohol.  It seems to have gotten worse the last few years (the tolerance).  A couple of sips and I'm dizzy!  I wasn't told that I couldn't have alcohol (even with respect to my meds - which is essentially aspirin) but I'm wondering if anyone thinks the fact that there is less flow to the brain has anything to do with the low tolerance.  Just my thought that it might.  Of course hydratration and moderation are key.  Although my brother says I'm a wuss (he could have ten beers and be fine).   

Being a roller coaster fan, I was initially concerned about not being able to go on any anymore.  I haven't yet, but after hearing about Michelle, Tara and David's ride in Vegas, I'm totally up for it in Orlando.  Universal, here we come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  (Someone may want to keep an ambulance nearby, just in case - you're looking at the person who went to Six Flags five years ago on Motorola Day and rode the twin coasters ride six times without ever getting off!)

I had a wonderful time there for my honeymoon a Week before my Stroke.  DO NOT RIDE the rides more then 10 in an HOUR!!!!!!!!

Universal To Avoid for headakes I had afterwords!!:   RED Duleing Dragon the blue is great!

DO NOt do the HULK in the FRont OR BACK rows sit in the Middle!!!!!!
BACK TO THE FUTURE!!! I threw up twice and that is when my migains started was after that ride!!!!!!

A must do is Mickey's Philharmagic (3D show)
Epcot: Avoid Misson Space!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! VERY BAD!!!!! Make sure you see the fireworks here.

Hang in there - I was driving a week after I got home from both of my surgeries but don't tell anyone!!!
(Actually I wanted my hubby to go up to the chemist to get my headache killers and he couldn't straight away so I decided to go!!) I was told the reason not to drive was because of the anaesthetic as it stays in your system for a very long time (up to a year!!) and there was no way I was not driving for that long!! I was actually told not to drive for 6 weeks but I don't generally listen very well - I am a Gemini!!!

Anyway it seems that you are doing very well and making good progress. Good to see!

Here's some additional ammunition - most of the Stanford patients are able to drive once their staples are removed (usually one week post-surgery).

Of course, each case is different, but thought you'd like to know the standard here.

Long story, but my daughter, Tara, has been a swimmer her entire life.  When my husband registered us on this site, we thought Tara would be the one posting, so he used a name that was applicable to her.  (It's also part of her email address.)  Anyway, it's got chlorine (chlorine is a chemical used in pools).

i just wanted to dig up this thread again... cause it seems to be an ongoing "issue" in my life (yes ok i'm 23 and very involved in the music scene and am out 4-5 nights a week and presently don't have a car to drive home!....) soo......

anyway, probably not the best advice for people out there but i've definitely had a few nights where i've had more than 2 drinks and (apart from the occasional morning-after-queaziness) i've been fine... but yeah i guess as a reminder it's just all about listening to your body... there's been times when i've definitely had 1 and then known tonight's-not-the-night-for-it...

anyway back to cold turkey now don't worry! too close to op time... time to get back in the mindframe!

I just got diagnosed with moya moya in past year after I had a mini stroke ... I'm to the point where I can't have caffeine at all cause it makes me feel awful and like I'm bout to have another mini stroke ... I can have a drink sometimes but if I over do it i pay for it for several day ... I haven't really talked to anyone with moya moya so I'd love anybody to reach out ... I'm new to it and they wanna schedule for me to have brain surgery still
