Moms surgery on the 24th
Aug 11th, 2004 at 5:30pm

Hey everyone! Smiley Momma is having her surgery on the 24th of this month at Stanford and I have some questions. What should we be expecting after her surgery? I have read about the facial swelling and possible bruising, anything else? And I am still a little fuzzy on the outcome of the surgery. I mean, what are her chances of having any other problems afterwards? I know everyone is different, but statistically speaking. Can we all rest easy afterward. Will the replinished blood supply have a chance of helping the damage that has already occured? Me and my family don't want to have that constant fear looming in the back of our minds of"will this happen agian, and if so, when?" ya know. That constant fear and worry is taking alot out of us, especially daddy. I just want her to be okay and for life to go back to normal, without the worry. I know all of you know exactly what I'm saying, that's why I am SO glad I found yall. If any of you have any answers or any other info of what we can expect, we would be very greatful. Thanx alot guys! Smiley

Hey nikki-

I had my surgeries four months ago and my family is definatly at ease now. Of course everyone still worries a little about me but for the most part things are back to normal. I feel great! Like you said everyone is different when it comes to MM but the people at Stanford are great and will answer any questions you may have before surgery. My thoughts will be with you and your family.

First, my prayers and the prayers of my family are with you.  I'm Tara (gotchlorine)'s dad Campbell and she had her surgeries on June 2 & 9.  No one can tell you for sure what the long term results will be, but so far we're happy and everyone else I've read about is happy.   Short term results vary widely - Tara had both ends of the spectrum.  After the first, she was ready to go two days early, bright and chipper.  After the second, she stayed an extra day because of problems, went home and then bounced right back to Stanford for a couple extra days.  Swelling on the brain caused communication difficulties.  She also had visible swelling on her face and a hint of a black eye.  Some pics have shown dramatic black eyes on others.  The worst part was not showering or washing her hair.  Please read my reports in June on the message board - they'll give you an idea of what's to come.  Campbell

Nikki,
By my understanding, the replinished blood supply might help with the stroke damage, it didn't with Tyler, but has with some. As far as do you need to worry, statistically speaking, a very few people have had to have the surgery again. However, I'm not clear on whether it was an inexperienced doctor doing it the first time or the MM progressing. In either case it is a rarity, so I am guessing no need to overly worry, just keep up with the follow-ups and all should be ok. For your question "will this happen again, and if so, when?" I am guessing my son has the same chance of having a stroke as anyone else now, the surgery corrected the problem that caused his stroke, and what would have caused another stroke, had he not had it. So, will he have another stroke? I hope not, but I figure we all have an equal chance now. So, why stress over the uncontrollable, I will keep up with his follow-ups and yearly testing, so if anything seems weird we are on top of it, but I'm no longer worried he will have a stroke tomorrow.
Just help your mom through the recovery and enjoy her, life is to short to worry and worry takes the fun out of life.

Nikki,
Right after Mandy's first surgery we saw a change in her strength. The proper blood flow made a huge difference. When she went into surgery she couldn't sit up even on a 45% angle without her whole body shaking worse than someone with parkensons disease that stopped instantly. You could just see how much better she was all around even after the first surgery, she still had a long way to go with therapy's and working on her speech. She is getting there though she's 85% better than she was.
