Toxic reaction to Dilantin
Oct 6th, 2004 at 3:37pm

I have a question to mmers  that were put  on Dilantin as a precaution against seizures. Two weeks after my first bypass, i developed an uncontrollable fever, and severe pain in my head that included light and noise sensitvity. I went back into the hospital and was diagnosed with a toxic reaction to Dilantin. I was told it was rare. So is it just me?

lisa-

i personally have not had or heard of a toxin reaction but i did get a rash all over my legs and back when i was put on dilantin. it could just be a reaction your body had cause we all react to different things. i hope all is improved and wish you the best!

Kathleen was put on a anti seizure med after her first surgery. They weren't sure if she was having seizures or not so it was precautionary. She had a terribly reaction to this and was crying uncontrolably and scratcvhing at her face and head. All I could do was to sing to her and rub her face with cool cloths.Nothing would calm her. They did finally give her Benadril. It was at this time she was having a showering of strokes on one side and a major stroke on the other. Now that I hear about your reaction her scratching at her head and face may have been because of pain.

I was having multiple TIA`s at the time and was crying due to the head pain myself-- i feel for Kathleen, it is miserable to go through. I never developed the rash so it took awhile for docs to figure it out. thanks for responding, I thought i was the only one. ----

I know what you must ahve been going through. This was the most terrifying time I have ever been through.I could see Kathleen "slipping away".It seemed like this went on forever as she lost different motor functions. It kills me to think of what pain she may have been going through. But on a good note those were her last stroke and she is doing amazingly well!
