As research shows, the doctors are still unsure if it is hereditary (sp?). So unfortunately, all you can do is watch for symptoms and get them tested if it is supected.

Dear Yoki,   I asked the same thing a couple of months ago when I found this site!!  Someone posted that there's between 7-10% chance of mm being hereditary so, even tho it's small, it's still there.  Just being aware & totallly informed of the symptoms (like tia's, numbness, headaches, etc.) will help you tremendously.  Don't scare your kids with it but if you do notice symptoms, at least now you know how to handle it!!  This site is wonderful for finding out whatever questions you have...good luck!

Yoki,

That is a very good question, my mother has MM and has recently had surgeries on both sides of her head and is doing well.  She had a stroke (both her parents died of strokes, not sure if connected to MM),I asked if I should be worried and since nobody is certain, I got an MRI.  My regular/local Dr. was happy to refer me for it so insurance covered it.  Thankfully it came back normal (I'm 25) but was going to send an email to Dr. Steinberg at Stanford to ask him how often he feels I should be checked through my life.  Maybe you can ask a neurosurgeon to help you with a "plan" for your kids to be checked?
Best of luck!
Connie
