now she has a cold and surgery is next week
Feb 15th, 2005 at 11:53am

Breanna's surgery is next week and now she has a cold- runny nose and sore throat.  I have her an appt. to go to the family Dr. Will they still do the surgery if she has a cold?  I know she was sent home before her palate surgery due to her blood count not being normal.  They said she had an infection coming on.  So Im really wondering if I got her on an antibiotic now, if she will be ok for her surgery next week....

I dont have a an answer to your concern about Breanna being sick and surgery but i will keep her my thoughts and hope that she does feel good enough so that she can have her surgery next week. It is definatly nerve racking going through the surgery itself and im sure that another obstacle is hard but have faith cause you have a very strong little girl and hopefully it will all be the past. Keep us posted.

This is not the same surgery but when we were preparing for my daughters open heart surgery (she was 7 mths old) we got all the way to the pre-opt stuff the day before surgery when they came to me and said they thought she had a urinary tract infection and that surgery may have to be post poned, I fell apart because as a parent you prepare yourself for this major surgery, you have to tell yourself that the surgery is necessary and that you are doing the right thing but yet it is killing you to know that your child has to go through the surgery and pain and you can't take it for them, so emotionally you are preparing yourself. When the news comes that you may have to live in this nightmare longer it is the most horrible feeling!  Then, like I know this is how you feel, I realize I did not want to put my daughters health in jeopardy for my selfish reasons, and I new that if we had to wait so that she would have a better chance of a safe recovery, then that is what we would have to do,,,emotionally I was a wreck!  I sympathize with you, hopefully she will make a speedy recovery from this cold.  It turned out that in my situation they contacted the surgeon and he said that she was going to be having fluid antibiotics during the surgery to ward off any infection that could happen with the surgery and that a little urinary tract infection should not stop the surgery because the antibiotics would stop the infection from spreading in her body.  I will pray that your family will recieve the same kind of news for you daughter.
Hugs, Smiley

Cara started to have a running nose before the first surgery but her chest sounded clear and temps were normal...they kept checking vital signs up to the time she went down to the OR.   But I could see how swollen her face was after the first surgery...so a cold would be even more uncomfortable such as airway already stuffy due to cold and could be further restricted by the swelling but the doctors will decide that and make a decision whether to proceed or delay the operation. It was amazing how they monitor things and use antibotics via IV when needed.  I'll keep Brianna in my prayers that she gets stronger by the time the surgery rolls around.   hugs,  carasMOM

I took Breanna to our family Dr. and he put her on some antibiotics and seems to think she will be just fine for next week.  She really is just having a snot-nose.  Breanna tells me her throat feels better...She is a doll she told me she does not need no operation on her brain and that she promises me she will never have any more strokes...She is so strong!  Im so fortunate and blessed to have her!  thank you all so much for your thoughts and prayers!  God Bless you all!  Tina
