Question about post stroke CAT Scans
Feb 28th, 2005 at 2:24am

Trey had a CAT Scan in November that showed fluid on the right side of his brain.  This was done at our local hospital and told to the Neurologist.  Without her seeing it, but with the radiologist's reading of the report it was agreed that it was probably fluid filling in the area where the brain had "shrunk" due to stroke.  In January she still had not seen the CAT Scan and Trey had is Angiogram done and the doctor that did the Angiogram saw the fluid and agreed that it was probably fluid filling up the area, a healing thing.  The Neurologist has since seen the CAT Scan done in November and knows about the Angiogram.  I emailed her to ask if she had seen the CAT Scan and she emailed me back saying that the fluid was old blood and that if Trey were still on Lovenox she would take him off of it, but since he isn't on Lovenox any more then we will just talk about the CAT Scan in April when we see her.  I emailed her back and asked if this is anything that we should be concerned about.  Have anyone on the board had CAT Scans or any other tests that show fluid after strokes?  Old blood?  The November CAT Scan was 7 months after the second stroke, the one that affected the right side of the brain, it was 5 months after he had his surgeries.  Anyone else have this happen?

Thanks,

Michell

Hi Michell,

This is going from memory...In January when my mom had another CAT scan (before surgery), it was still showing blood on her brain.  She had her stroke back April and that was a hemorrage (so that would be 9 months later), was Trey's a hemorrage?   They told us that the blood would slowly dissipate over time...seems like 9 months is a long time but I'm guessing the brain knows what's best Smiley  I don't remember them mentioning any other "fluid", just the blood.  I hope this can be of some help to you!  Sounded to me like it's normal...?

Wishing you the best!

Hi Michell,

I’ve been thinking about your adorable son lately, I’m so glad to hear from you. I hope and pray Trey is doing well.

I wish I had a specific answer for you though, but there are so many factors involved in answering your question, because every MM case is different, and many different reasons for the fluid showing up on the CT, but ya know...I do remember you mentioning your concern about the fluid in your prior posts and thinking…I wonder what type of surgery Trey had. (??) The reason I thought about the type of surgery is…I remember reading in the studies and research by Dr. Scott, a MM specialist, who does mostly the indirect surgery on children saying, that in his research, he believes that there are growth factors in the fluid surrounding the brain of patients with moyamoya syndrome which seem to be responsible for the development of the new blood vessels. Now, I have no idea if this would even pertain to Trey or not, but a thought I had, never the less. This is another good reason why we always emphasize a MM specialist too, because a specialist has on going research and this can make you feel more confident in the answers to the many questions and factors with this rare disease.

As always, you, Trey and your family are in our constant prayers. Please give your precious little one a hug for me. BTW, when I see his picture on the mm family page, he makes my heart smile.
